A karaoke bar owner tried to bribe a police officer after drink-driving over the speed limit without a driver’s licence, a court has heard.
Quingxiang “Kevin” Meng fronted Hobart’s Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to all charges.
Mr Meng opened the Superstar Karaoke bar in 2019, and at the time it was the first and only karaoke bar in all of Hobart.
Court documents allege Mr Meng was charged with the driving offences on December 3 in Kingston, and was charged that same day with offering to bribe a police officer in Hobart.
At a previous court appearance, Mr Meng’s defence lawyer said the charges could put his Australian living arrangements in jeopardy.
“It could have a significant impact on my client’s visa,” the defence lawyer said.
On Tuesday Mr Meng was given bail and was told to reappear at Hobart Magistrate’s Court on 13 May later this year at 2.15pm.
