A Launceston secondary school teacher has been arrested and charged over a series of child sexual abuse allegations.

A 34-year-old St Patrick’s College staff member was taken into custody on Friday, charged with two counts of sexual penetration of a child.

Tasmania Police say the offences allegedly took place in 2019.

Catholic Education Tasmania released a statement in response to the allegations.

“A member of staff from St Patrick’s College has today been charged by Tasmania Police,” the Catholic Education Tasmania spokesman said.

“We understand the potential impact this may have on the College community,” the Catholic Education Tasmania spokesman said.

“Our priority remains the wellbeing and support of our students and staff. We will be working closely with members of the College and the broader community to provide them with support during this time.

“No further comment is appropriate as the matter is in front of the courts.”

Tasmania Police said the man was charged with child sex offences following an extensive police investigation.

The man is set to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on June 5.
