Australia's cocaine crisis

Two Tasmanian men have appeared in court charged conjointly with trafficking cocaine.

Devonport man Ryan James Penton, 33, and National Park man Javed John Dixon, 27, appeared in Launceston Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged conjointly with trafficking in a controlled substance, cocaine, and possessing a controlled drug, cocaine.

Tasmania Police allege both offences were committed in Longford on May 12 this year.

Mr Penton also faces an additional charge of possessing a controlled drug, while Mr Dixon has an additional charge of using a controlled drug.

Mr Penton and Mr Dixon both pleaded not guilty via their lawyer to all charges.

The substantive matters were committed for trial in the Supreme Court on October 17.

Mr Penton and Mr Dixon’s additional summary matters were adjourned sine dai – i.e. to a date to be determined – to allow for the indictable matters to run their course.

Both men were admitted to bail on their own undertakings.
