A maladjusted Tasmanian man smashed his phone and threw it out the car window when he heard police were searching his bedroom, where they would ultimately discover a depraved stash of child exploitation and bestiality material on his devices.

Mount Direction man Kaine Allen Jenkins, 22, also possessed videos and images of a woman known to him naked in the shower without her consent, Launceston Supreme Court heard on Friday.

Jenkins pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation and bestiality material, possessing prohibited firearms – gel blaster replicas of a rifle and machine gun – and possessing prohibited visual recordings.

All offences were detected following a police search warrant executed on June 10 last year on the Mt Direction home he shared with his parents.

Jenkins was not home when the warrant was executed, but after being contacted by his parents, he smashed his iPhone and threw it out the car window en route home, the court heard.

He subsequently admitted the phone’s disposal to police, who recovered the device.

A search of Jenkins’ laptops, hard drives, iPad, phone and SD card uncovered voluminous offending material.

About 1000 child exploitation images were discovered, of the two most serious categories, featuring real pre-pubescent children engaged in penetrative sex with adult males.

An additional 105 bestiality images were found, as well as 24 images and recordings of a woman known to him naked in the shower.

He had no prior criminal history and had spent no time in pre-sentence custody, the court was told.

Defence counsel Patrick O’Halloran told the court his client had been socially isolated living with his parents – who remain supportive of him – and displayed “depressive-like symptoms”.

He said Jenkins’ rehabilitation had been retarded by the dearth of clinical psychologists in Launceston with capacity to take on his client as a patient.

However, Jenkins was engaged in regular sessions with a social worker as a first step, Mr O’Halloran said.

Justice Helen Marie Wood said it was vital for Jenkins to obtain “intensive psychological intervention”.

Mr O’Halloran told the court he and Jenkins’ parents were trying everything they could to affect this.

Justice Wood ordered a pre-sentence report into Jenkins and adjourned her decision to November 9 at 4.15pm.
