At least two of the young people allegedly involved in a waterfront robbery that ultimately resulted in the tragic drowning of a 27-year-old Hobart man have been granted bail.

Chantelle Gloria Devine-Wordsworth, 25, and Hayden Nichols, 19, each appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with aggravated robbery.

The Lenah Valley woman and the Berriedale man were both granted bail and will return to court on February 26.

Neither of the pair have been charged with causing the death of Deepinderjeet Singh, 27.

Mr Singh drowned off Franklin Wharf on Monday night after he and his female companion were allegedly pushed in, during an apparent robbery gone-wrong when a group of young people allegedly stole the woman’s handbag.

A 17-year-old boy from Goodwood has been charged with manslaughter, allegedly by pushing Mr Singh into the water.

He was due to appear in court on Monday, also charged with aggravated robbery, along with a 17-year-old Berriedale girl solely charged with aggravated robbery.

However, the media was prohibited from their hearings due to their age.

Tasmania Police is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Singh’s death, which occurred about 10pm on Monday night.

Mr Singh’s female companion was able to swim to safety, but Mr Singh could not be saved, despite efforts from passers-by.

Police have made a call to speak to a “community-minded member of the public” who found a phone that was later handed into the authorities.

Tasmania Police said they wished to thank the person, and believed they could help with their ongoing investigation.
