Defrocked Anglican priest Louis Daniels to plead over historic child sexual abuse

Former Tasmanian Anglican priest Louis Daniels will soon take the next step in his case over two historical child sex abuse charges.

Defrocked Anglican priest and former Burnie Archdeacon Louis Victor Daniels is expected to soon enter pleas to two historical child sexual abuse charges.

Daniels, 75, has been charged with two counts of persistent sexual abuse of a child or young person, dating back to the 1970s and 1980s at Coningham and Meander.

On Monday, Daniels – who now lives interstate – briefly appeared in the Supreme Court of Tasmania by phone link.

His defence barrister Cameron Scott said a report was currently “being obtained”, but added it was expected the matter would resolve at Daniels’ next hearing.

Daniels resigned from the church in 1994 and was officially deposed in 2002.

During his church career, Daniels was a prominent leader of the Church of England Boys’ Society in Tasmania, a youth group for young boys under 16.

After leaving the church, Daniels left Tasmania and began working as a teacher in Canberra, before losing that role.

He then completed a Diploma of Librarianship and began working as an information officer at the University of Canberra.

Daniels’ matter will return to court on March 27.
