The Oppo R9 Plus is a solid alternative to expensive high-end smartphones

THE days of needing to purchase a luxury smartphone to meet all of your needs are slowing disappearing, with mid-range products now offering functionality well above the price range.
One such surprise package is Oppo’s R9 Plus, which retails for $579 and includes a number of great features.
The R9 Plus is one of the bigger offerings on the market, with the device having a 6-inch display and 1920x1080-pixel resolution.
For people who opt for larger displays, the 6-inch screen is very welcomed and makes watching content or reading news a treat.
The display is not the only large aspect of the device, with R9’s 4120mAh battery offering more than enough power to get you through the day — this is coming from a heavy smartphone user accustomed to carrying around battery packs.
Not only does the R9 shine in terms of battery duration, but it is fitted with Oppo’s VOOC Fast Charge technology, which will give you 75 per cent of battery in just 30 minutes.
In terms of storage, the phone comes standard with 64GB and being an android, there is the option to add more with a slot for a removable mircroSD card.
In order to live up to its self-proclaimed title of “selfie expert”, the R9 includes a 16MP front facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture.
The rear camera is also 16MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture.
In all honestly the camera is not up to scratch with the premium options offered on the iPhone 7 Plus or Sony’s Xperia XZ, but I don’t think it pretends to match these devices.
For a mid-range phone, the camera is more than sufficient for all your social media needs.
And while it might struggle in some situations, those willing to play around with the manual settings will have fewer issues.
Audio wise, the R9 Plus packs a decent enough punch to listen to music direct from the device, although you still might want Bluetooth speaker when playing for more than one person.
There is no denying the device is very similar to iPhone in design — all the way down to the fingerprint scanner on the bottom of the display.
And the Apple inspiration doesn’t stop there, with the ColourOS layer that Oppo layered over the top of Android making the device hold similar functions to iOS.
All in all, the R9 is solid offering for only a smidgen of the price of more premium devices on the market.
While it might be missing a few luxuries, it has more than enough for someone who doesn’t want to spend a bucketload on a smartphone.
I have been using it as my primary phone for the past few weeks and would have no hesitations to suggest people follow suit.
For me this phone is perfect for people who lose their devices, parents wanting to get their teenagers their first smartphone or anyone who just wants a phone to do simple tasks.
