Super Mario Run will not be able to be played without an internet connection
WHILE Super Mario Run is predicted to be one of the top five grossing iOS games of all time, its success could be hindered by one issue.
THIS week will be a landmark event for both Nintendo and Apple, with Super Mario Run coming to iOS.
Not only will it be the first time Nintendo has released a Mario game for a piece of hardware it did not build, but the title has also received an unprecedented amount of publicity from Apple.
While the highly anticipated game is predicted to be one of the top five grossing iOS games of all time, its success could be hindered by one major flaw — it doesn’t work offline.
Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto said Super Mario Run would require an internet connection to play on all of its modes.
“[This is] a requirement that’s been built into the game to support security,” he told Mashable.
“We’re launching in 150 countries and each of those countries has different network environments and things like that. So it was important for us to be able to have it secure for all users.”
Mr Miyamoto said a network connection was also needed to ensure the three game modes of Super Mario Run can interact with one another.
“We had thought at one point that it would be nice to have the World Tour [story] mode available stand-alone, to be able to play without that connection,” he said.
“But then the challenge is when that’s operating in a stand-alone mode, it actually complicates the connection back to the Toad Rally and Kingdom modes.
“And because those two modes are relying on the network save, we had to integrate the World Tour mode as well.”
So if the lack of ability to play the game on flights doesn’t bother you, Super Mario Run will be released on December 15 for $9.99 on iOS.
