FOUR-WHEEL DRIVERS have been warned to be prepared following an incident on a challenging West Coast track.
A group of 12 people set off on the Climies Track on Saturday but suffered a vehicle breakdown.
Climies Track is rated very difficult and recommended for experienced 4WD drivers only, including hill-climbs, bog holes, rocky river crossings and eroded sections.
Family raised the alarm hours later after losing contact.
Police 4x4 vehicles began a search of the track in the early hours of Sunday morning and were joined by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter when flying conditions became more favourable.
The group had slept off the track and were able to contact family and emergency services to say they were safe and well.
West Coast Police Senior Sergeant Adam Spencer said anecdotally the track was one of the state’s hardest and people should be prepared.
“Make yourself familiar with your intended track and ensure that it is achievable for your level of skill and experience,” he said.
“Ensure your vehicle is well prepared and suitable for the terrain, and always carry appropriate recovery gear. And make sure you have a plan for when something goes wrong.
“Carrying items such as first aid kits, maps, GPS, EPIRBS, satellite phones or messaging devices could save your life.
“Finally — never go alone. It’s unsafe and it’s also no fun.”
