A GARBAGE truck driver has been found guilty of a charge of negligent driving causing death, in relation to the death of an 80-year-old pedestrian in Burnie back in 2021.

Eric Leonard Flight hit local woman Pamela Gee as she was crossing at the lights on the corner of Cattley and Mount streets during a routine shopping outing.

She later died in hospital.

In the Burnie Magistrates Court on Monday, Magistrate Leanne Topfer told Flight she found the charge proved.

“She had started to cross the road on the green light. She did not suddenly run out into traffic. Mr Flight simply did not see her,” Magistrate Topfer said.

“The truck had a blind spot but Mr Flight knew about it. He should have leaned forward to get a proper view of the crossing. It was his responsibility to keep a proper lookout.

“In the circumstances I am satisfied his driving that day was below of the standard of a prudent driver.”

The court was told Mr Flight was not affected by alcohol or drugs at the time and the Volvo truck he was driving was travelling at about 17km/h at the time of impact.
