COVID travel: Can the airline industry survive coronavirus?

VIRGIN has launched a Binge on Tassie mega airfare sale due to demand for flights to Australia’s island state.

Passengers coming to and from Tasmania will be able to access fares from as low as $69.

The Virgin Australia Binge On Tassie sale comes as both Tasmanians and Victorians wait on news about when the border between those two states will reopen.

It also comes as the Covid-19 situation in NSW intensifies and more locations are deemed high risk.

The sale will offer up to 30 per cent off return-way economy flights to Hobart and Launceston for select travel dates between July and April next year.

The sale fares include baggage, seat selection, Velocity Frequent Flyer points and status credits.

The airline has also announced it will add an additional 46,000 seats compared to pre-COVID levels between July and October on services between Queensland/New South Wales and Tasmania.

“We recognise the strong appetite for Aussies to explore parts of the country on their bucket list, and Tasmania is definitely one of those destinations, offering incredible natural beauty, world-class food and wine, as well as art and culture,” a Virgin Australia spokesman said.

“So we’re making it even easier to get there with fares from as low as $69.

“We’re seeing strong demand for flights to and from Tasmania and so we’ll begin to add more capacity to the market over the next few months with approximately 46,000 additional seats when compared to pre-pandemic levels.

“This is great news for Virgin Australia, our people and all of the communities in Tasmania that benefit from the tourism economy.”

The airline also announced it would give Velocity Frequent Flyer members who book an eligible flight by June 30, 50 per cent bonus Velocity Point.
