Alleged speeder in borrowed car has some explaining to do

Police say there has been a jump in high-risk driving behaviour in the state’s North West as another motorist is clocked travelling more than 50km/h above the posted limit in a residential area.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

AN ALLEGED speeding driver will not only have to answer to the police after the borrowed car he was driving was impounded for three months.

Tasmania Police said the 23-year-old man, from Stanley, has been charged with several offences after he was allegedly caught travelling over 111 km/h in a 60 km/h residential area in Burnie.

Police said there has been an increase in high-risk driving behaviour in the State North West with 16 drivers found travelling more than 30km/h over the posted speed limit in July alone.

they detected a white Subaru Liberty travelling at excessive speed on Old Surrey Rd, Havenview about 2.40pm on August 1.

The driver tested positive to a roadside drug test and later provided an oral fluid sample for analysis, police claim.

He will be summonsed to appear in court for unlicensed driving, excessive speed and drug driving, pending the analysis results.

The vehicle, which was borrowed, has been impounded for a three-month period.

“Travelling at this speed in the middle of the day and in a residential area is extremely concerning,” Sergeant James Scicluna said.

“In July, members from just the Western Rd and Public Order Services detected 16 people travelling in excess of 30 km/hr over the speed limit on the North West Coast.

“Disappointingly, we are seeing an increase in this type of high-risk driving behaviour.”

Any information pertaining to unsafe driving practices or illicit drugs can be provided to police on 131 444 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
