Two supercars licences are up for grabs but, like the cars, they‘re going fast

Do you feel the need for speed? Love the smell of octane in the morning? Well, now you have the chance to take possession of your very own supercars team. Here’s how to do it >>

SO you’ve got a spare $500,000 and you fancy owning your own supercars team – well, here’s your chance.

With the third round of the 2021 championship to be held at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway this weekend, would-be supercar team bosses have until 5pm on Friday to launch a bid to join the grid in 2022.

Supercars Australia has put up two licences – known as Racing Entitlement Contracts – to go to the highest bidder at the close of business.

With 24 supercars to race in round three of the championship at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway this weekend, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said the field will expand to 26 championship entries in 2022.

“We’ve recently had new team owners join the Repco Supercars Championship, with the likes of Tony Quinn and Stephen Grove coming on board in 2021,” Seamer said.

“This is an opportunity for a new team owner to join the fold or offer an existing team owner the opportunity to expand their program.

“Supercars has already received interest from several parties to purchase these RECs.

“The championship’s competitive racing is the envy of the motorsport world and the interest we have received points to a bold, confident and exhilarating future for the Championship.”

The two RECS up for grabs have been surrendered by Tickford Racing and Garry Rogers Motorsport.

Potential buyers should be warned that it will cost them at least another $1 million to put a one-car team on the grid for the season, and $2 million if they want to win.

Seamer said a new era in the sport would be ushered in next year with the Camaro set to take on the Mustang in a two-make fight.
