The Hobart Hurricanes sign third international — this time a young England all-rounder

Hobart Hurricanes have secured their third international for BBL11 with the signing of an English all-rounder. MEET THE LATEST RECRUIT >>

THE Hurricanes squad is now complete with up-and-coming English all-rounder Jordan Thompson joining the Canes for BBL|11 along with fellow-internationals Sandeep Lamichhane and Harry Brook.

It will be a reunion of sorts for Thompson and Brook, who combined in the English summer to set a record sixth-wicket stand of 141 in a T20 match for Yorkshire.

The Hurricanes hopes their duo can do similar in purple.

A left-hand bat and right-arm medium-pacer, Thompson, 25, has come through Yorkshire’s underage and Academy programs, and recently also took part in the inaugural edition of The Hundred, playing with the Northern Superchargers.

It will be his Big Bash debut.

“I’m really excited to play in the Big Bash for the first time,” Thompson said.

“Back home, it’s a tournament we watch with great interest during the winter months, so I’m looking forward to meeting up with the team and experiencing it for myself.”

Thompson had a breakout season during 2020, scoring 234 runs and taking 15 wickets in Yorkshire’s five North Group matches in the Bob Willis Trophy.

He fell two runs short of a maiden century against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, and finished the season by claiming his first five-wicket haul, having hit 62 in the first innings, to help beat Leicestershire at Headingley.

Thompson, an excellent fielder, compliments the Hurricanes line-up having the ability to score with a high strike-rate at the back end of an innings with the bat and middle-over skill with the ball.

“It will be great to work with a new bunch of players and coaching staff,” Thompson said.

“I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can and playing the role that the team need me to.”

The Hurricanes’ first match of KFC BBL|11 will be on December 8 against the Sydney Sixers at UTas Stadium.
