It’s a bout that’s been months in the making and with a potential Australian title fight now on the horizon, Tasmanian boxer Sab Wells knows this Saturday’s long awaited showdown with Nathan Silver is his biggest challenge yet.

The 22 year-old from Hobart made the jump from the amateur ranks to the pros in May last year and has quickly impressed plenty around the country with his 4-0 record.

Last defeating Sadudee Srimueang back in June, Wells could turn even more heads should he be able to keep his own undefeated record intact and put the first blemish on Silver’s record.

“This has been three fights in the making,” Wells said.

“Last time it was pulled the week of, we had another matchup which didn’t go through but it’s finally happening.

“He’s undefeated as well, two wins and one draw. He comes from a professional soccer background and it’s just going to be a good test for me compared to the other fights I’ve had.

“It’s just two young undefeated fighters going at it, which you don’t see a lot of in this sport and it’s exactly what I need to boost myself up. I really want to get a shot at an Australian title next year and fights like this are going to get me there.”

Coached by Tasmanian Boxing League president Adrian Lovell, the highly respected veteran told The Mercury earlier this year that Wells talent at such a young age had all the traits of one of Tasmania’s most successful boxers, Daniel Geale.

“He is a very humble kid and nothing is out of his reach,” Lovell said.

“He has the potential to be the next Daniel Geale; I strongly believe that. He has been with me for 11 years and we see a lot of hot prospects around but Wells is one of the best.”

It’s been a quick but successful rise through the professional scene for Wells who was one of the state’s most successful amateurs in recent years winning a number of titles.

And while the step up may be a daunting task for some, the confident but humble Wells believes he is still yet to reach his full potential in a daunting prospect for his future opponents.

“I don’t put pressure on myself,” he said.

“I feel the same every fight. I’ve had a lot of them now. I know a loss wouldn’t be the end of the world, but I’m not going over there to lose.

“I was able to capture six Australian titles in the amateurs and I was quite successful there, so I don’t see any reason why I can’t be as successful in the professional ranks.

“I’ve been able to revise and be smarter with my training along the way and I really feel like I’m only just starting to peak now, so I’m very ready for what’s next.”

Wells and Silver will do battle at The Melbourne Pavillion on Saturday night’s Big Time Boxing card.
