The coach of Hobart boxer Sab Wells believes the young gun has all the makings to become the next Daniel Geale following his impressive showing in Launceston this past Saturday.
Adrian Lovell, Wells’ coach and the president of the Tasmanian Boxing League, had a front-row seat to the 21 year-old’s victory over Zac Cotten with the six-round unanimous points decision taking his professional record to 3-0.
While he may still be in the early days of his professional career, Lovell has no issues with comparing the ceiling of Wells to that of a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist given his incredible talent and strong work ethic.
“Sab boxed very smart and for him to put on such a display would have had a lot of people impressed and intrigued by his performance,” Lovell said.
“If we can get him to 4-0 (after a bout in Melbourne in May) then the doors will really open up and I’d love to see him fighting for a Tasmanian state title by the end of the year.
“He is a very humble kid and nothing is out of his reach. He is every chance to have an Australian title shot come next year and he has the potential to be the next Daniel Geale.
“I strongly believe that. He has been with me for 11 years and we see a lot of hot prospects around but Wells is one of the best.”
Fellow Tasmanians Nathan Griffith and Tyler Blizzard also secured victories with Blizzard winning the AMBF Australasian Title and Griffith securing the first pro win of his career in a 56 second first-round knockout.
