Sab Wells, Nathan Griffith and Tyler Blizzard set to add local flavour to Launceston fight night

Despite an 11th hour change in opponent, a Tasmanian local is confident of keeping his undefeated professional boxing record intact this weekend.

While he may have faced a much different build up than usual, Sab Wells is confident he can extend his professional boxing record to 3-0 at Saturday’s ‘Tussle at the Tail Race’ in Launceston.

The first professional boxing card in the state’s north in years will be headlined by local Tyler Blizzard – who will compete for the ANBF Australasian Super Featherweight Title – while fellow undefeated Tasmanian Wells will also be a main attraction.

Set to face Zac Cotten in a six-round bout, the fight will be Wells’ first in months after an opponent withdrew from his last scheduled matchup.

“I was supposed to fight four weeks before this event in Melbourne but they pulled out the week of and we couldn’t find a replacement so this is week 15 of training camp for me,” he explained.

“I’m very excited to get it on and I’m feeling very fit. I’m 2-0 as a pro boxer and I’m looking for my first KO victory.”

Victory for Wells could also see the Tasmanian enter the top 10 rankings that will put him in contention for a number of titles later this year.

Saturday’s card will feature six professional bouts and 15 amateur contests and has been brought together by a collaboration between Big Time Boxing, Tazzy Az and Colla-Blizzard Boxing.

Fellow local Nathan Griffith will also step into the ring and will be looking to secure a win in his second professional bout against Jeremy Green in a four-round battle.

Originally set to face another fighter, Griffith said the change in opponent mattered little to his approach with the former footballer loving his switch from the field to the ring.

“Over the last two years I’ve taken boxing more seriously and I’m really loving it,” Griffith said.

“The challenge is on yourself in boxing and there is nowhere to hide so if you don’t put in the work you will get found out.”

Blizzard’s original opponent also withdrew but co-promoter Adrian Lovell was confident he will still have a strong challenge in new opponent Sitthidet Phanaensa after he stepped in earlier this week.

Doors open at 4pm on Saturday with professional bouts to begin at 6.30pm.
