Tasmania’s best high school netballers are set to represent the state at the Waverly International Schools Netball Championships later this week.
10 girls from St Aloysius Catholic College will travel to Victoria on Monday and will compete against schools from right around the world across the four-day tournament.
After winning the Tasmanian High Schools Netball Championships in 2023, St Aloysius recognised both their talent and dedication and decided to enter them into the yearly event.
But while they’ve had to work incredibly hard on-court, the players have had to be just as determined off it with the group raising $10,000 to fund their trip.
St Aloysius PE Teacher, Peter Kay, has aided the players’ build-up to the tournament and said it was a terrific achievement for both the team and the school.
“They staged a massive comeback to make the (state) grand final and then to win it against all the schools around Tasmania. It was just a marvellous event, so we thought we’d go one step further and see how they go on the interstate stage against some international and interstate teams,” Kay said.
“I think they’ve got nothing to lose. They’re all heavily involved in club netball and representative teams on weekends. But for many though this is their first interstate experience and we’re just going with no real expectations but certainly, when they cross that white line they’ll be putting the best foot forward.”
With students from across two campuses involved in the team, Kay said it was also a great chance for the school to integrate students together that normally don’t interact on a daily basis.
“When the girls do come together it’s pretty seamless,” he said.
“It’s been good to be able to share that positive news across the two campuses and it really builds a sense of school spirit.”
