There were plenty of twists and turns in the latest round of Southern Football League action.

Shock results occurred as the final make up of the ladder started to take shape.

Here are all the key talking points.

DON’T DISCOUNT THESE LIONS

Huonville Lions might sit fifth on the ladder but you can’t discount last year’s runner-up in the premiership race. On Saturday, the Lions recorded a 25-point win over the previously undefeated Cygnet to showcase their power in the premiership push. Michael Paul led from the front in his second game back with four goals, just a week after he kicked 16 against Claremont. Liam Ward continued his purple patch to be named the best player on the ground while Cameron Johns and Alex Bessell also impressed.

The win came as somewhat of a celebration after the club announced before the game coach Callen Daly has re-signed for the 2025 season.

“Reflecting on the first half of the year, the players have shown enormous growth on and off the field, making my decision to recommit an easy one,” he said in a club statement.

“I love the club, and everyone involved. It’s an exciting time as we gain momentum for a strong back end of the year.”

SMITH LEADS SORELL IN A TIGH TUSSLE

Sorell emerged from the weekend still in the lead for the race for the double chance after a win against Dodges Ferry. And in part it has leadership group member Jacob Smith to thank after an impressive best on ground performance which included three goals. Skipper Adrian Butterworth wasn’t far behind with an impressive performance of his own as Kobe Bennett continued his strong form after returning to the senior side in May. It was a special day for Jaken Broom and Jedd Johnson who made their senior debuts.

TREYMAYNE’S PURPLE PATCH

Brighton’s Jack Tremayne is currently one of the most in-form players in the competition. He’s been named in the best in four straight games after a stunning performance against New Norfolk on Saturday. He was named best afield as his side recorded a 21-point win to keep touch with the top-three while making New Norfolk’s unlikely finals push more difficult. His performance included a goal as Jack Lamb led the way with four majors. Jacob Young, Aiden Waller and Darcy Gardner were also impressive.

LINDISFARNE CELEBRATE MILESTONE DAY

Lindisfarne showed its class in a big win over Hobart on a day of celebration. Vice-captain Dylan Zantuck and Teege Westbury celebrated their 100th games with strong performances. Zantuck was described as “tough as a $2 steak” while gun midfielder Westbury is “as hard as a cat’s head” according to a club social media post. Westbury kicked a goal in the win. Ed Stanley enjoyed a day out in front of goal with nine majors.

STARS SHINE IN MILESTONE GAMES

Angelica Clark and Chelsea Thomas both celebrated their 50th games in North Hobart’s big SFLW women’s win over Lauderdale. The pair were both named in the best as the Demons claimed the inaugural Work It Out Cup. Tassie representative Grace White enjoyed her best performance of the season in front of goal after booting four to take her season tally to 14 from nine games.
