BIG crowds are predicted for Tasmania’s premier thoroughbred racing day as punters break out the fascinators, frocks and fun.
Finishing touches have been applied at Elwick racecourse for Sunday’s Hobart Cup.
Tasmanian Racing Club chief executive officer Brendan Blomeley said last weekend’s derby was well supported by locals and the club was expecting a bumper cup crowd.
“Elwick looks a real picture – the new StrathAyr track is just unbelievable – it’s a world-class track,” he said.
“I think 6000 people through the gates would be fantastic and that’s what we’re aiming for, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s more.”
That’s not unrealistic considering a weather forecast calling for a high of 22C.
Mr Blomeley said those expected to contest the title include interstate competitors Taikomochi and Home By Midnight and locals Toorak Affair and Shady Hustle.
“Racing is about entertainment and celebrating these majestic animals, but also just having good fun,” he said.
“It’s the premier social event on Tasmania’s calendar – we’ve got the Wolfe Brothers playing, fashions on the field and the official luncheon – something for everyone.”
Many racegoers will be sporting bedazzled headwear created by Tasmanian milliner Haidee Neill, who runs Miss Haidee Millinery.
“The process of getting ready is just as fun and important as the day – it’s about looking unique while respecting tradition,” she said.

Ms Neill said millinery could be creative, conservative or the main statement of the outfit.
In the lead-up to the local racing season, she has been busy designing head crowns and headbands embellished with details of pearls, gold, silks and flowers.
Ms Neill said 2020 would see details on the side of the head featuring simple hair so as not to detract from the head piece.
Gates open at 11am, with the Hobart Cup running at 4.30pm.
