The women will take centre stage this Sunday when the OVA Southern Saints Athletics Club celebrates its fifth TAL carnival at the Domain Athletics Centre.

The event is also set to break new ground for females in the sport thanks to the backing of former runner Lauren Jauncey-Gorringe.

Jauncey-Gorringe has jumped on as sponsor of the women’s gift, through her company S.days, with the winner set to receive more prize money than the men’s race – an Australian first.

Also responsible for getting the women’s Stawell Gift equal prize money when she worked at Australia Post, the mother of three said it was another important step for equality in sport.

“I’m really excited to be sponsoring the women’s race,” Jauncey-Gorringe said.

“It’s something I’m really passionate about, women in sport and equal pay for women in sport.

“I’m really strong on making sure women’s sport is on equal terms with men’s but especially excited about this one as I believe it’s the first one in Australia where the women’s race is worth more than the men’s.”

Sunday’s event will feature a strong field of athletes with former Stawell Gift finalist Lucy Carter set to compete.

Races over 100m, 300m and 800m will be on offer for senior athletes while the para race will also have prize money up for grabs.

Races will be run between 12-3.30pm with kids and masters events also on the cards.

“It’s always an exciting day that gives athletes of any ability the chance to be involved,” Jauncey-Gorringe said.
