Penrith veteran Scott Sorensen will have to prove his fitness if he’s to take the field in Saturday’s NRL preliminary final against Cronulla.
The 31-year-old was a late withdrawal from their qualifying final win over the Sydney Roosters a fortnight ago, but has slowly ramped up his training in a bid to re-join the team.
In-form second-rower Luke Garner, who scored two tries in Sorensen’s place against the Roosters, will be expected to fill the void should Sorensen fail to make it back in time.
“(Sorensen) has been really good, I think he’s going really well,” Garner said.
“But I’m just going with the flow. I know my role on this team. It depends on how the big fella goes this week. I’d love to have him back. He’s one of my good mates and one of the guys I love playing with.”
Sorensen was named among the reserves in the Panther’s initial team list, while Brad Schneider has retained a spot on the bench.
Schneider, who has been the primary back-up for Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai this season, keeps his spot ahead of rookie utility Trent Toelau.
