Broncos coach Kevin Walters has moved to bolster up his outside back stock by signing promising young Queenslander Isaiah Tass.

The Mackay product has inked a one-year deal with the Broncos on a development list contract as he continues his push for an NRL debut.

The 21-year-old has spent the past two years in the Canterbury system and was part of the 2020 Bulldogs NRL Nines squad last February.

However, the try-scoring machine had limited football last year when the NSW Cup was suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fast-paced centre has become the latest addition to Walters’ new-look outside back squad – which includes pre-season recruits David Mead and Dale Copley.

Walters said he had been impressed by Tass so far this pre-season and looked forward to fostering another young Queensland talent.

“We just wanted to get him into our system,” Walters said.

“Everything that we’ve seen from him so far has been good and positive.

“He’s a good kid, a good character.

“His game needs a bit of developing but he’s an attacking-style centre and has skills you can’t coach and we’re very happy about that.

“We’re bringing him home as well because he’s a good, young Queensland kid.

“We like to think we’re a club where we provide opportunities for Queensland kids.”

Tass joined the Broncos before the Christmas break and has returned with the rest of the playing group this week for the first days of the 2021 pre-season training.

During a 13-on-13 drill at Red Hill on Thursday, Tass trained at both centre and wing as Walters continues to assess his options.

“He’s been really good,” Walters said.

“He didn’t play a lot of football at the Bulldogs last year but we’re really happy with what he’s been doing.

“He’s good, strong character which is the type of people we’re trying to recruit here.”
