NRL early mail 2021: Predicted starting teams for every club in Round 1

He looked back to his barnstorming best for the Indigenous All Stars, but Andrew Fifita is set to miss out for the Sharks in Round 1.

KFC SuperCoach NRL team make their 2021 draft picks

Trent Barrett has dropped his first bombshell as Canterbury coach by selecting little-known Bradley Deitz to make his NRL debut.

Deitz - who turns 26 today - has been chosen in Barrett’s 21-man squad to face Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday.

A talented hooker with lethal speed, Deitz’ persistence to achieve his NRL dream has paid-off following stints in the under-20s and in the NSW Cup for the feeder-clubs of the Rabbitohs, Sharks and Roosters.

Deitz was offered a train and trial contract by Barrett at the Dogs in January and has made every post a winner, including an impressive trial performance against Cronulla a fortnight ago.

Deitz has earned his call-up with first-choice hooker Jeremy Marshall-King pushing to overcome a foot injury.

In a boost for the Dogs, Jake Averillo, who has been in doubt with an elbow injury, is also set to be named at five-eighth to face the Knights.

Sharks coach John Morris will not pick veteran prop Andrew Fifita for Round 1 with the former Test and Origin prop relegated to an extended bench for Sunday’s clash with the Dragons.

The talk out of Cronulla all off-season has been that Fifita, who has battled a series of leg injuries in recent years, was in his best shape in some time.

But he’s missed out to start 2021 with Aaron Woods and Braden Hamlin-Uele preferred at prop with Toby Rudolf to start at lock.

Billy Magoulias, Jack Williams and new recruit Aiden Tolman have beaten Fifita to a bench spot.

Will Kennedy will start at fullback and Matt Moylan at five-eighth with Connor Tracey to act as the side’s utility.

Daine Laurie will be given first crack at the Tigers fullback spot after named in the No.1 jersey. It means ex-skipper Moses Mbye has beaten out hopeful debutant Jock Madden to partner Luke Brooks in the halves, with Adam Doueihi suspended for Round 1. Gold Coast Titans coach Justin Holbrook is set to make a brutal selection call by overlooking Queensland Origin winger Phillip Sami for Round 1.

And he may not be the only big-name omission, with Newcastle recruit Herman Ese’ese also in danger of sitting on the sidelines for the NRL season opener against New Zealand on Saturday.

Holbrook is expected to go with livewire Corey Thompson on the wing for the clash against the Warriors, relegating Sami to the reserves.

Sami made his State of Origin debut for the Maroons last year, but now faces a stint in the Intrust Super Cup due to the Gold Coast’s depth in 2021.

Holbrook said he had some tough decisions to make, including the snubbing of Sami.

“Everyone is available for round one which is what we always wanted,” he said.

“I’m still not completely sure on a couple of bench spots to be honest, which is due to how many quality players we’ve got here.

“(Thompson and Sami) are both terrific players and bring great qualities to our side. There’s a few key guys in a battle for spots.

Ese’ese joined the Titans in the off-season after playing all 21 games for Newcastle in 2020.

But he is looking at a bench spot at best given the front row talent at Holbrook’s disposal.

“He could only play one trial so he was better off playing 60 minutes against Burleigh than 30 against the Warriors,” Holbrook said.

“He is in the mix. There are six or seven guys trying to get two or three spots.

“He needs game time, like all the big fellas. The game’s got quicker and they need to get match fit.”

Jai Arrow and Benji Marshall will make their Rabbitohs debuts off the bench with Wayne Bennett to use the duo as super subs for South Sydney’s season opener against Melbourne on Thursday.

With Bennett preferring Tevita Tatola and Tom Burgess as his front-rowers and Cameron Murray ensconced at lock, Arrow will ride the pine to begin his tenure at Redfern.

Marshall, who only joined the club late in the pre-season, will act as the club’s utility.

Jacob Host has won the race to start at second row ahead of Keaon Koloamatangi.

The Rabbitohs will be trying to win in Victoria for the first time, having lost all 16 matches against the Storm south of the border since 1998.

Ryan James will make his club debut for the Canberra Raiders against the Wests Tigers despite nearly two years on the sidelines.

The former Gold Coast Titans front-rower, who hasn’t played since Round six in 2019, will be named on the bench in the Raiders’ 17 man squad.

“He really deserves it,” says coach Ricky Stuart, “He’s had a couple of horrific injuries but has worked really hard to make it back.

“Ryan moved his family to Canberra early and started training with our Under 21s before the NRL squad got back. You can’t speak highly enough of his commitment.

“He came through our trial well and deserves a go first up.”

STORM V RABBITOHS

Thursday 11 March, AAMI Park, Melbourne, 8.05pm (AEDT)

Storm:Harry Grant is out for the first three rounds due to a knee injury suffered in the final trial with Brandon Smith to start at hooker and plenty of options for the bench with Nicho Hynes the favoured option. Brenko Lee didn’t play in the trial due to a hamstring injury and won’t be fit with George Jennings set to play right wing outside Reimis Smith. Dale Finucane suffered a calf injury at training in the past week and will miss the opening six weeks of the season which will see Christian Welch start at lock and Chris Lewis coming onto the bench. Dean Ieremia started the trial against the Knights and didn’t look out of place. He was promoted to the Top 30 this past week making him available for Round 1 if selected.

Rabbitohs: South Sydney are sweating on the fitness of Jaydn S’uA for Round 1 after he failed to play in the trial due to injury. If fit he would start on the right edge with Jacob Host on the left and Keaon Koloamantangi dropping to the bench. Campbell Graham should be fit to play after failing to finish the trial after a head clash with Poasa Faamausili. Jaxson Paulo and Josh Mansour are fighting it out for the starting right wing position with Paulo getting the nod in the Charity Shield but Mansour will start there in Round 1. Benji Marshall will win the bench utility position after spending time at hooker in the Charity Shield. Jai Arrow spent time on the right edge during the Charity Shield and could see some game time there during the season. Liam Knight didn’t trial due to concussion and has been ruled out with Mark Nicholls to get final bench spot. Jed Cartwright is unavailable after having surgery this past week.

Knights: Newcastle start with a number of players on the injury list with Lachlan Fitzgibbon (shoulder), Blake Green (ACL), Edrick Lee (foot), Jirah Momoisea (Achilles) and Kalyn Ponga (shoulder) all unavailable. Kurt Mann and Mitch Barnett both missed the final trial due to personal reasons and will come into the squad with Mann partnering Mitchell Pearce in the halves and Barnett starts on the left edge. Hymel Hunt also missed the trial due to a hamstring injury but did train with the squad during the week and should be fit for Round 1, with Gehamat Shibasaki set to get the left wing position ahead of Starford T’oa.

Will Hopoate could shift to centre for the Bulldogs in 2021. Picture: Getty Images.

Bulldogs: Have a number of players in doubt leading into Round 1. Nick Cotric suffered an ankle injury in the final trial and will need to prove his fitness. Jake Averillo suffered an elbow injury a couple of weeks ago but should be fit to play. If Cotric isn’t fit, coach Trent Barrett could be forced to play Averillo at left centre with Brandon Wakeham holding the five-eighth position. Dylan Napa (knee) and Raymond Faitala-Mariner (ankle) both had interrupted pre-seasons and didn’t play in the trial but both have returned to training with view of being fit for Round 1 though both will be eased back into it. With Jeremy Marshall-King suffering a lisfranc injury in the All Stars game, hooking depth has come into question with only two hookers in the Top 30. If Marshall-King is ruled out, someone like Lachlan Lewis may come onto the bench as back-up hooker to Sione Katoa, who would be hard pressed to play 80 minutes in the NRL. Josh Jackson will move to lock in 2021 with Adam Elliott on the left edge next to either Averillo or Wakeham, and Corey Waddell partnering Kyle Flanagan on the right edge.

BRONCOS V EELS

Friday 12 March, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, 8.05pm (AEDT)

Broncos: Coach Kevin Walters has dropped the first selection bombshell of his career with Tom Dearden set to be axed as halfback in favour of Brodie Croft for the Broncos premiership opener against the Eels. Brisbane are also expected to welcome back Herbie Farnworth (chest) and Anthony Milford (thumb) who both missed the final trial. Jesse Arthars, who picked up an ankle injury in the trial, and Dearden are the two players expected to make way. Tom Flegler suffered a shoulder injury in the trial and will have to prove his fitness with Ben Teo to come into the 17 if Flegler is ruled out. David Mead is expected to win the left wing position ahead of Richie Kennar. The other position up for grabs for Kevvie Walters is whether to run hooker Corey Paix on the bench or four forwards with Corey Oates as utility. John Asiata and Tom Flegler are both free to play despite being placed on report in the final trial. Jordan Riki suffered a burner to the shoulder at training last week but should be fit to play. Ben Te’o looks to have beaten Corey Oates for the final bench position after Oates played in Q Cup trial on weekend.

Roosters: Victor Radley and Sam Verrills (both coming back from ACL surgery) won’t play in Round 1 which will see Adam Keighran or Freddy Lussick coming onto the bench as utility and Daniel Fifita or Egan Butcher also coming into the 17. Angus Crichton looks set to switch to left side to partner Lachlan Lam this season with Luke Keary, who is in some doubt due to a hamstring injury, set to partner Sitili Tupouniua on the right edge. Josh Morris didn’t take part in the final trial after being a late withdrawal and could be in some doubt with Matt Ikuvalu playing left centre in the trial. Sea Eagles: Manly’s hooking ranks could be dealt massive blow with Cade Cust in doubt after suffering a broken left thumb in the trial against the Tigers which saw development player, Sione Fainu, a prop by trade, spending time at hooker. But in good news he is expected to be fit for selection, while Lachlan Croker is expected to be named despite suffering a hamstring injury at training. Daly Cherry-Evans, Kieran Foran, Jason Saab and Jake Trbojevic should all be available after being rested from the trial. Josh Schuster could jag a bench utility role with injuries in hooking ranks. Reuben Garrick’s position in the 17 is in question with new recruit Christian Tuipulotu a chance of replacing him. Morgan Harper has been talked about as Tom Trbojevic’s replacement at fullback but Dylan Walker could also play fullback with Brad Parker at centre.

RAIDERS V TIGERS

Sunday 14 March, GIO Stadium, Canberra, 4.05pm (AEDT)

Raiders: Captain Jarrod Croker is racing clock to be fit for Round 1 after having surgery in the off season and not playing in the trial against the Roosters. Jordan Rapana wins the left wing position with Bailey Simonsson on the right wing outside Curtis Scott.
