North Hobart broke through for its first win of the TSL season in a thriller against Launceston at North Hobart Oval on Saturday — the perfect way to celebrate stalwart Brad Tilbury’s 150th club game.
The first time the met in round six, Launceston walked away with a 63-point win at Windsor Park. It was a different story on Saturday as the Demons kicked 7.8 (50) to 6.7 (43) to win the milestone match by 7.
On their home deck the Demons were fierce, holding Launceston scoreless in the opening term and leading 4.4 to 2.1 at the long break.
The third term was an arm-wrestle as both sides posted 2.2, and the Blues came home with a wet sail in the final term outscoring the Dees and getting within two points.
That’s when 16-year-old Charlie Bovill became the hero for the Dees, clunking a marking in the goal square and converting with a goal to seal the deal.
It was vindication of the belief North Hobart coach Adam Bester has in his baby Demons.
“It’s has been a long year but we’ve finally got the monkey off the back,” Bester said.
“It was a relief for the boys and we will continue to work hard and forge forward toward the end of the season.”
Dylan Riley was the bravest of them all, managing to kick three goals — half of Launceston’s score — on one leg after tearing a hamstring early in the first half.
Launceston coach Mitch Thorp said North was the better side.
“We gave ourselves too much to do and to be honest we didn’t deserve to win,” Thorp said.
“Credit to North Hobart — they had a lot of energy with ‘Til’s’ 150th so were desperate to get a win and deserved it.
“The ‘old bloke’ Dylan Riley kicked three goals for us on one leg.
“He nicked his hammy early in the game but kept rolling around — he’s a star.
“Connor McCormack was good for us on a wing and a young bloke Jake Wheeler had 15 tackles at half-back, so they were pretty good for us.”
