Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar was left broken hearted before his debut race in Formula 1 even got underway.

As the Australian Grand Prix drew closer to getting underway on a wet track, there were fears chaos could ensue and it unfolded before the lights even went green.

The grid slowly made their way off the mark as the formation lap commenced, but for Hadjar his day lasted only two corners.

On a rain-soaked circuit the 20-year-old attempted to get some heat going through his tyres as he made his way around the second corner.

Unfortunately as soon as he put his foot down, the back of his car flicked out and sent him sliding towards the barriers.

With a broken rear wing and unable to get his car going again, Hadjar’s day was officially over.

David Croft said in commentary: “He backed off to then floor it to put some heat into his tyres. This is not a day to be doing that.”

Martin Brundle added: “They’re called rookie for a reason.”

In heartbreaking scenes, Hadjar was ruled out of the race before it even began and he was in tears behind his helmet as he walked back to the pits.

“He’s crying his eyes out,” Brundle said on Sky Sports.

Still wearing his helmet, Hadjar was consoled by Lewis Hamilton’s dad Anthony as the rookie trudged back through the hospitality area at Melbourne Park. Earlier, Hamilton senior had wished the rookies and all the drivers luck in the wet conditions.

“That’s good support from Anthony there and just horrendous luck for Isack,” Croft said.

The start of the race was aborted was Hadjar’s car was winched off the track. The rest of the grid waited a few minutes longer to get the season underway as teams rushed out on track with tyre blankets and all manner of equipment.

Once the race got back underway it wasn’t long before more carnage unfolded with two more drivers joining Hadjar in the sheds.

Australian rookie Jack Doohan became the second rookie on the day to bin it into the wall after he lost control of his car.

A slight touch of one of the white lines saw Doohan slide across the track and crash into the wall which brought out the safety car.

As the cars began to slow down under the safety car, Williams’ Carlos Sainz lost control of his car making his way around the final corner.

He ended up in the barriers and was unable to move his car as his day also came to an early end.
