Gout Gout cracks elusive 20 second barrier in 200m final

Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has put in a run that has to be seen to be believed as he finished more than two seconds ahead of second place in his 200m heat at the Queensland athletics championships before backing it up with a sub-20 second run in the final.

On Sunday, the 17-year-old sizzled in the heats, with his run clocking 20.05, the fastest recorded time over 200m this year - eclipsing Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba 20.13 in Texas last month.

Second place in Gout’s heat on Sunday, Zaine Leigh, posted 22.22 seconds, showing just how big of a disparity it is from Gout to his nearest rivals.

With a legal wind of +1.2 metres per second at his back, Gout again bettered the Australian open record in the 200m – the 20.06 set by Peter Norman at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

However, he fell agonisingly short of a new national record, the 20.04 run he had in Brisbane in December.

But despite destroying his rivals in the heat, it appeared he still had more to give and there was every chance he could crack the 20-second mark later on Sunday.

And that he did with an unbelievable 19.98 in the final.

However, sadly the time won’t offically go down in the record books as anything above a + 2.0 tailwind is seen as too much of an aid, so with the +3.6 tailwind in the final well above the threshold it won’t officially count.

That being said cracking the 20-second barrier is something not many athletes can say they ever achieved in their career, let alone at just 17 years of age.

It comes after Gout clocked a final time of 10.38 seconds on Saturday to win the Under 20s 100m final by almost half a second.

It was only 0.01 secs quicker than Gout went in winning his heat earlier on Saturday, and short of his fastest legal time of 10.17 seconds — achieved in the final at the Australian All-Schools Championships in Brisbane in December.
