Tasmania University coach Ben Van Kraanen is excited by the potential of his young group.
Despite last season experiencing a confronting end, a heavy loss to St Virgils in the Old Scholars Football Association grand final, the Rainbows senior mentor believes it was an important lesson for his side.
The club’s playing list has an average age in the early 20s meaning there is plenty to look forward to in the short and long-term.
“We absolutely hated losing but we gained a lot of experience from that game,” he said.
“We’ve got a core group that is continuing to grow together, it’s important we get internal growth every year.
“I believe we’ve got some very talented young players on our list who can keep us pushing towards success.”
Uni have arguably been the busiest club in the off-season with a number of new faces walking through the door.
Among them is Nathan Cranfield, who won three premierships with Lindisfarne in the Southern Football League, and looks set to play a key role in defence.
Cygnet premiership player Braden Livingston looks to be another impressive signing.
Tristan Barnett will bolster the forward line after returning to Tassie after playing in the NSW Hunter Central Coast competition in 2023, finishing as the leading goalkicker.
The trio will help to offset the loss of key players James Glover and Tom Cleary who have joined TSL outfit Clarence while Troy Cunliffe has retired.
Van Kraanen, who signed a new two-year extension last season, said the club had “recruited well” over the summer months.
“Getting in new faces is always important,” he said.
“We’ve been blessed with being able to get guys in from across the Kingston zone over the last couple of years.
“We’re happy with the guys we’ve been able to bring across, they’re certainly going to add to our depth.”
With the season start now just several weeks away, St Virgils once again look to be the team to beat.
Van Kraanen just wants to see his team keep building.
“Hopefully we can have success, we want to continue developing as a good club,” he said.
“I think it’s going to be another even season. There’s a lot of quality players in this competition and it’s only getting better every year.”
