One of the biggest sporting events on the Tasmanian calendar will not go ahead in 2025.

Organisers have announced the Ironman 70.3, which is held in Hobart, has not been included in the race calendar for next year.

Ironman regional director Carl Smith told this masthead “it definitely wasn’t an easy decision” to call off the event.

He said timing had been a significant factor.

“Ultimately it was all around timing and evaluating our calendar as a whole for 2025 looking at where the event sits into that,” he said.

“The decision was made we hibernate the event in 2025 and we take the next 12 months and evaluate how that calendar looks and how we’re shaping up for future years.

“We need to take some time to consult with stakeholders, consult with the community, consult with athletes and with our people internally to review all aspects of the event.

“(We need to consult about) how we can come back and make it the best version of the event.”

While Smith couldn’t say when the event could possibly return, he said he was hopeful of seeing the event conducted in future.

He said the last two years had been “incredibly successful” according to race officials.

“The athletes have loved it. It’s one of the more challenging racecourses we have on the circuit,” he said.

“All the feedback we have had is fantastic, everyone has loved travelling to Tasmania.”

TAS Triathlon shared its own response to the news on social media too.

“With a heavy heart, we received news that Ironman 70.3 Tasmania will not be featured on the 2025 calendar,” the post said.

“We are grateful to Ironman for providing the opportunity here in Tasmania for the past 2 years and are hopeful for its return in the future.”

The 2024 men’s race was won by Western Australia’s Nick Thompson while Chelsea Sodaro took out the women’s category.
