They are the young players waiting in the wings for their change to impress for their country in the international arena – maybe even as soon as the Paris Olympics.

WATCH THE U20 SUMMER SLAM LIVE FROM MONDAY, JAN 17

Australian coaches Tim Hamill and Paul Oberman and top high performances official Charles Turner have been in attendance at the Summer Slam water polo event in Brisbane for days, monitoring the progress of 18 and under talent who have been without major competitions for the best part of the last two years.

The 20 and under event, which starts on Monday with numerous daily matches livestreamed on News Corp websites including The Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail, Adelaide Advertiser and Herald Sun, is a way for some of the older players to press for selection in upcoming national squads.

The Paris 2024 Olympics is looming, with water polo keen to be pushing for a medal in the women’s competition at least after the Aussie women were knocked out in the quarter-finals in Tokyo.

The long-term goal is for Australia to be winning gold medals in both the men’s and women's competitions by the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

With input from national coaches and officials, we take a look at some of the players expected to make a splash in the 20 and under competitions which starts on Monday.

20 AND UNDER MEN TO WATCH AT SUMMER SLAM

MARCUS BEREHULAK, QLD

A tough young player who has already impressed the current Australian men’s coach and been invited to a Sharks camp. Good form could see him make a travelling squad this year and he is a potential player for the Paris Olympics in 2024. A driver and centre back, he will get opportunity and is looking to study and play at a US College.

NOAH BRIGHT, QLD

An exciting young Queenslander with plenty of potential. This tall timber has great reflexes and athleticism. He has good body position in the water and is a player being looked at long range with potential for the LA and Brisbane Olympics.

TRISTAN GLANZNIG, NSW

Another long range prospect for Australian water polo. Tristan has physical talent and is a driver. A craft player from Sydney, he is also a good shot and one of the younger prospects being looked at long term. Like Marcus Berehulak he was involved in a Sharks camp prior to Christmas.

ANDREJ GRGUREVIC, NSW

Another Sydney player who is a long term prospect for Water Polo Australia. A tough player who has shown promise. His biggest attribute is his game sense and vision. Seen as a student of the game and plays for the strong Sydney University club.

SAM MCKENZIE, SA

A big, tall teenager who swims well and plays centre back or forward. Young, he played in the 18 and under competition at the Summer Slam. He may be an outsider for the Paris Olympics and is expected to get an opportunity to go into camp at some stage. Has been travelling to Sydney to play with Balmain and is looking to go to the US to study and play.

OLIVER PURCELL, VIC

A young Victorian player who has been turning heads. A goalkeeper in the 18 and under team who will play up and the 20s tournament. Has excellent leg work and agility in the goal.

WILL VALENTINE, QLD

A young talent who also player at the 18s and under tournament. A very good shooter of the ball. An attacking player known for his explosiveness and with a good vertical jump. Potential to play at the LA Olympics and onwards but will be fast tracked into Sharks opportunities in the next few years.

MATT WILSON, ACT

A young gun from the ACT. Wilson has been with the squad before the Tokyo Olympics. Tall timber, he is a centre forward and very athletic with long arms. Has the potential to push for a spot at the Paris Olympics and is in the Sharks train-on squad.

20 AND UNDER WOMEN TO WATCH AT SUMMER SLAM

TENEALLE FASALA, QLD

Was named in the Olympic squad before the Tokyo Games last year. The daughter of former swimmer Greg Fasala, she is a centre forward and very strong for her age. A very efficient mover who played at world juniors and boasts a strong outside shot and knows how to score.

SIENNA GREEN, NSW

Sienna Green is very tall with good legs which help when she plays centre back and long arms when at centre forward. Very good player for her age. Very dangerous for all positions. A utility player.

MACY HANSFORD, NSW

This NSW youngster has been in junior squads and is seen as a longer term prospect for Australian water polo. A talent who can play as outside shooter or centre forward. Dangerous and deceptive with the ball.

SIENNA HEARN, NSW

A very good court attacker from NSW who reads the game very well. Solid and good technique with very good legs. Can make lots of intercepts and steals. Fom the Balmain club in Sydney and is in the national squad.

LEXIE LAMBERT, NSW

A young utility player with a cracking outside shot. One player you need to be right on or will cause damage. A very good secondary option and part of the national squad. From the Sydney Uni club.

ALYSSA WEST, SA

A 20-year-old goalkeeper with great physical characteristics. Has long arms, good legs, reach and is a good passer of the ball. She has good solid technique and is a long term prospect expected to get some exposure.
