It’s 10 years away but top water polo officials are on site at the Summer Slam checking out the budding talent they hope will deliver Australia gold medals at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

A number of Summer Slam matches are being livestreamed across News Corp websites daily, including The Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail and Herald Sun and can be watched. HERE.

The 16 and under and 18 and under tournaments run from January 10-13 and will be followed by the 20 and under tournament from January 17-20.

At the venue itself, Water Polo Australia General Manager Performance, Charles Turner, is watching games across the 16 and under, 18 and under and 20 and under tournaments as he and national coaches look to scout emerging talent and rising stars.

With little competition across the country due to Covid the past two years, Turner admits many players are looking a little rusty, but said that is to be expected.

“No one is ready to play but this is terrific, having a tournament like this and giving them a go at the game we love,’’ Turner said.

“What I’m trying to do is look past how kids are playing on a daily basis and potentially I’m looking to develop teams for the future.

“There’s reason to be optimistic and are planning is a long range one. We are trying to generate the next generation of kids.

“The plan (for the men’s team) is to do as well as we can in Paris, be competitive medals wise in LA (in 2028) and be winning medals in 2032.

“The women are a little different. We would hope they would be medal contenders in Paris and gold medal contenders in LA and Brisbane.’’

Turner said all players will be looked at but big, tall talent is of particular interest.

“We are looking for the spine, the goalie, centre forward and centre back. That’s been a weakness of ours,’’ he said.

“But that doesn't mean we aren’t interested in skilful players, no matter the size.

“We are giving it a red hot go for Brisbane Olympic Games. The work starts now.’’

TEENAGER WITH PARIS OLYMPIC DREAM

When the Tokyo Olympics were on, teenager Sienna Green was in lockdown, on the couch and cheering on the Australian water polo teams with her parents.

In 2024 at the Paris Olympics, the Sydney schoolgirl is hoping to be in the pool with the Stingers and with her parents watching on from the stands.

A rising star of the sport, the 17-year-old is already in the Australian open squad and could be in the mix to pull on an Olympic swimsuit in 2024.

“Being in Paris would be pretty cool,’’ she said.

But in upcoming days it is the Summer Slam that will have her attention with Green a member of the NSW Blues side hoping to dominate the 18 and under girls competition in Brisbane.

Green, who plays with Sydney Uni, started playing the sport when nine with her height a major advantage in the pool.

“I’m six foot three and have always been tall,’’ said Green, who lives at Mosman, attends SCEGGS Darlinghurst and will also be playing in the Australian water polo league from January 26.

“I did like it from the start because I came from swimming which I found a little boring.’’

A centre forward, centre back, Green said another attraction of the sport is the camaraderie.

“I love being with my teammates and I also like the physicality,’’ she said.

Australian women’s teams have a strong history at the Olympic Games with the host nation famously winning gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In Tokyo Australia’s women were knocked out after a shock 9-8 quarter-final loss to Russia.
