The Northern Hawks have sent a timely statement just three weeks out from the start of TNL finals after a 66-50 win over Cavaliers in the top-of-the-table Launceston derby on Friday night.

But the Cavaliers believe they can muster a legitimate challenge to the Hawks’ continued dominance if they clean up their costly mistakes.

Looking to go through the season unbeaten for a second straight year, the Hawks won every quarter to improve their season record to 12-0, and build a two-game gap atop the ladder.

Hawks co-captain Ashlea Mawer racked up 52 goals in the win, and the flag favourites seemed to grow in strength as the match went on.

They built a three-goal quarter time lead to eight by the main break, and were never headed in the strong win.

The result means the Cavaliers, who beat Cripps last week to leap to second, must rely on Hawks continuing their winning ways against Cripps next round to grab a top two spot.

The regular season will conclude next weekend with a double header of rounds on Saturday and Sunday.

Cavaliers coach Dannie Carstens said her side simply didn’t bring the same standard as last week’s win over Cripps, but said it was a timely chance to address some flaws before another potential clash with Hawks in finals.

“It was disappointing on the night, we just seemed a bit flat,” she said.

“At one point though we outscored them 8-2 in five minutes so it shows we’ve got the capacity, we’ve just got to keep going for longer periods.

“It was a strong performance from them, it’s been a while since I’ve seen them play that well, but it shows we have to bring our A-game for four quarters to beat them.”

Hawks coach Alicia Sargent said the display was up there as one of their best of the campaign.

“Definitely, against the Cavs it’s always a tough tussle when we come up against each other,” she said.

“We hard to work hard for it, the Cavs put a lot of pressure on, but it was one of our standout performances for the season.

“Our full-team defence was something we spoke about in the lead-up, making sure we had pressure on every ball, which put us in a good position to win ball and force errors.

“In attack we looked after the ball and played steady.”

Carstens is adamant the Hawks are beatable, and is hopeful a peak performance against the standard setters is around the corner.

“You lose and you learn. We’ll have a look at some footage this week and see the things we have to execute better as a group, and hopefully we’ll get another crack at them in a couple of weeks’ time,” she said.

“Our decision making in regards to whether to give it straight away, whether to fake and feed or give it long, we didn’tt make great decisions with the ball and they forced us into that.

“Definitely, the belief is there. They played a really solid game and kudos to them, they pulled out a good performance when they need to.

“But a lot of our silly mistakes helped result in that final margin. Hopefully it will only help us build a stronger plan for finals.”

In other matches Cripps Waratah leapfrogged the Cavaliers back into second place narrowly on percentage after disposing of Arrows 90-10.

The Kingston Blues have all but wrapped up fourth spot and a finals berth after a 62-43 victory over Karana, while Devon was too strong for South East Suns 57-30.

PREVIEW

For many youngsters, embarking on your first senior season in a team that hasn’t been beaten for two years would be daunting.

But not for Northern Hawks teenager Ellie Marshall, who has already shown she can play above her tender years at elite junior level.

Still just 17, the Launceston College student will travel to the Australian Institute of Sport late next week as part of an under-19 Australian training squad.

The former Tasmanian under-17 skipper was selected after strong displays at April’s under-19 national championships in Darwin.

So it should come as little surprise the wing-defence/centre has already slotted nicely into the dominant Hawks set-up, before she faces her old side in Friday’s blockbuster top two Launceston derby at the Silverdome.

Marshall played under-19s for the Cavs last year, and the side is unbeaten in that division this season, but crossed to the Hawks for a shot at open level.

“I wanted to play at a senior level and the Hawks gave me the opportunity to do that,” she said.

“It’s been a step up in intensity but I’ve liked that, and my teammates have really helped me out. They’re all really experienced and made me feel comfortable.

“Just playing against different opponents who are quicker, more experienced and smarter (has been the biggest adjustment).”

The Cavs led the Hawks by a goal with a quarter left in early May, but the Hawks responded in the final term to win 63-60.

It was a rare time the Hawks have been tested after they were unbeaten last season, and remain so in 2023 after 11 games.

“We’ve always got each other’s back in crucial moments and even when we come up against easier teams, we don’t step back and still play like we’re against tougher opposition,” Marshall said.

“Late in the first game against them (Cavs) we stuck to our game and didn’t get sucked into their one-on-one defence.

“We just built up our defensive pressure late, which forced their errors. In the final minutes Lydia and Tessa (Coote) took crucial intercepts for us to get back.”

Marshall was shocked to get the call-up for the national under-19 camp, but said it gives her belief she can play at the top level.

“It did take me by surprise, because this year I was bottom age and didn’t expect to make it,” she said.

“It does give me aspirations to go to the next level and play in the big league.”

Hawks coach Alicia Sargent said Marshall has already displayed poise and temperament above her years at senior level.

“She just brings a really consistent presence to the court. You know she’s always going to be out there and give 100 per cent, be really strategic with her thinking and how she plays the game,” Sargent said.

“It’s quite outstanding for someone so young to be able to do that, and have that impact in open level netball.

“She works really hard for everyone in the team, she’s reliable in attack and defence. It’s good to see her thrive in the senior space.”

The Cavs enter the match confident after they leapfrogged Cripps Waratah into second spot with last week’s 58-55 win.

A victory would almost certainly wrap up a double chance in finals with two rounds remaining.
