After coming so close to opening their win account last weekend, South East Suns were brought back to earth with a resounding thud by one of the Tasmanian Netball League big guns in a special Good Friday round four match-up.

Hayley McDougall scored 62 goals as the unbeaten Cavaliers won the game 74-19, blowing the game wide open with a mighty 21-2 second quarter run.

The Suns, who fell one goal short of their first win of the season in round three against Karana, have now lost all four games this season. The nature of the defeats to the high-flying Hawks and now the Cavaliers, shows just how difficult it will be to join the TNL elite.

It was the Sophie Show as the powerful Cavaliers 19&U side continued their dynamic start to the Tasmanian Netball League season.

Sophie Brewer scored 50 and Sophie Blackberry contributed 40 as the competition leaders ran riot over winless South East Suns, scoring a season-high tally in a 90-38 victory.

The Cavaliers have now scored 261 goals in four games, with Brewer contributing 141 of those and Blackberry 104.

PREVIEW

It’s something that’s written in bold and underlined every week at the South East Suns – process over outcome.

While wins have been thin on the ground for the TNL’s newest franchise, the Suns have set their sights on rising as a force within five years.

After winning two games in their inaugural campaign last year, the Suns will be determined to add a third on Good Friday when they clash with F45 Cavaliers.

The clash, which will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV and The Mercury, comes off the back of an agonising one-point loss for the Suns last week.

Coach Andrew Jackson said learning from those close losses is all part of the development process as they field a new-look squad this season.

“We’re looking to develop and we’re definitely stronger this year, (but) we’ve probably got to put it on court a bit more,” Jackson said.

“We’ve got better personnel overall. A couple of them are coming back from injury and have to get more confident, but the more they play, that will improve.”

One of those is former Kingston sharpshooter Gemma Polley, who brings handy experience after missing two years with an ACL injury.

“It will take her a while to get confidence, and get back to where she was,” Jackson said. “Her first game back for two years was our round one game (a 15 goal loss to Devon) and we played her sparingly. She didn’t play Hawks (round two) and our game against Karana was her first serious one.

“She’s been really good around the group, she’s positive and a good person to have around.”

Jackson said the club is prepared to be patient with their development as they prepare for another touch assignment against the unbeaten Cavaliers at Launceston on Good Friday.

“It’s something we talk about every week and put on the whiteboard is process versus outcome,” he said.

“It’s not about the outcome for us, even against Karana. If we had got the process right the end result will come.

“Against the likes of the Hawks and Cavs – every team really – we work on process and we’ll see improvement.

“We’re looking at five years and building up, that’s what it’s always been about. We just need to keep building, get our kids and 19s playing better, and develop from the bottom up.

“It’s not about what happened last year, this year or even next year, it’s what we do in five years’ time if we do things the right way.

“Obviously there will be people who come and go. We need to work out who we want to keep, make sure we develop them and they’ll be our future.”

Cavaliers co-coach Lou Carter said the focus for the first few weeks is establishing combinations after a handful of player departures.

Last year’s grand finalists are 3-0 after holding off Devon 41-38 last week.

“It will take a while to establish connections again, we have about 50 per cent of different players and it’s great some of our under-19 players are stepping up.”

“Lily Case, Paige O’Neill and Matilda Allen are all new young players in our back end and are doing a great job so far.”
