Elouise Maher proved the hero with a second half double to guide Bass High to a comeback 22-14 defeat of Hunter Sports High in their NSW NRL Schoolgirl Cup clash at New Era Stadium.
The match was live streamed exclusively by KommunityTV on Friday along with the Peter Mulholland Cup game between Bass and Illawarra Sports High.
Hunter enjoyed a dream start with a try inside three minutes, as a Maronay Smuts bomb bounced horribly for Bass, falling into the waiting arms of Grace Smith to score untouched.
Bass wasn’t able to build sustained pressure on Hunter’s line, and the visitors quickly turned their lead into a double-digit advantage when Holly Winter took the line on and crossed with ease.

With time winding down in the first half and Bass High needing points, they looked destined to have scored in the closing stages, only to be ruled to have dropped it over the line.
Bass needed to strike first in the second half and they did just that less than four minutes into the period.
Kaizen Morgan-Pritchard was able to stay alive in a tackle, getting an offload away to Raneh Siteine who in turn found Cherish Niusere-Maiva to barge over her opposite winger and score.
Their momentum changed in an instant after Smith scored her second of the afternoon, fielding a kick on her own 20m line and taking it to the house for one of the moments of the season.
Not to be outdone, Maher took advantage of a quick play-the-ball to score beside the posts for Bass, bringing it back to 14-10 with 10 to play.
Hunter was reduced to 12 players with five minutes to go after Smuts was binned for a professional foul.
From the next set it was Maher out of dummy half again, scoring her second and the match-winning try for Bass High.
With Hunter having time for one last attack, Meme Sivo thwarted any hopes of a last-ditch try, taking an intercept and racing away to put the finishing touches on the comeback.
Replay: Bass HS v Illawarra SHS
A James Lanyon hat-trick has put the exclamation mark on a big Bass High win over Illawarra Sports High.
The 38-8 victory sees them advance to the finals phase of the Peter Mulholland Cup.
Defence had been strong from both teams in denying the other, but it was a simple dummy half scoot from Jireh-Trey Stewart caught Illawarra out to open the scoring for Bass.
Their lead soon became 10 after a lovely set play from a play-the-ball close to the line came up trumps.
Ali Hachim Karnib looped around the back to create space, freeing up James Lanyon to score in the corner.
The pain was compounded for Illawarra when a mix-up at the back after a Matthew Barakat chip allowed Pheonix Godinet to simply run through and touch down to stretch the lead to 16.
Finally the visitors had a good chance to attack and they made the most of their opportunity, with a backline movement ending up in the hands of Drtanyon Vaivai who finished with class in the corner, making it 16-4 at halftime.
The lead again grew just minutes into the second half with some fancy footwork from Chinedu Udeh from close range proving too much to handle.
The left-side proved potent to start the half, with a scrum inside the 20 netting another result as Paul Johnson benefited from some nice lead-up work by Udeh to make it 26-4.
A dominant opening to the half was capped with Lanyon picking up his second and third tries of the morning to push the lead beyond 30 and the result beyond doubt.
PREVIEW
Things didn’t go to plan for Illawarra Sport High in its Peter Mulholland Cup opener.
A 32-0 halftime deficit against a powerhouse Erindale College set up an impossible task.
Encouragingly they were able to keep a 10-all scoreline in the second half, something that assistant coach Nicholas O’Hara believes they can build on.
Illawarra will look to bounce back to form in it’s Round 2 showdown against Bass High, which will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a big schools league double header.
The Peter Mulholland Cup clash will play opener to an NRL Schoolgirls Cup clash between Bass High and Hunter Sports High.
O’Hara said his troops had not dropped their heads despite the tough opening round loss.
“We didn’t have the performance we wanted against Erindale in round one,” he said.
“The game didn’t flow our way from the start. We barely saw the ball for the first 25 minutes. The positive thing was they weren’t making line breaks through the middle.
“In the second half we fought back really well. Possession started to flow our way more. If we can start better, we can turn those results around.”
That begins against Bass in the second round of the competition, with O’Hara identfitying a couple of key areas that can help them turn the tables on their more fancied opponent.
“We got to see a bit of Bass play. They went really well,” he said.
“We’ve got to get our effort areas right. We don’t always have the size of some of the Sydney schools, but we’ve got the heart and if we put in with our kick chase and defensive structures, we’ll go a long way.
“We’ll look to tighten things around the ruck and slow the play the balls down. That will help solve some issues.”
In a major boost for Illawarra, they will welcome back a pair of Steelers’ Harold Matthews Cup representatives for their clash.
“We have a good front rower in Mason Andrews who leads from the front. He was one of our best in round one and he’s one of a host of boys from the Harold Matts system,” he said.
“We’ll welcome back Asher Chapman at nine and Oliver Burton at fullback.
“Our middles will get that boost from Asher and Mason. Jack and Oliver are pretty exciting players in the backline.”
