Live stream: Tasmania’s Amelie Millar key to their chances at Football Australia National Youth Championships

She is the brick wall at the back for Tasmania, but don’t be surprised to see gun goalkeeper Amelie Millar get her name on the scoresheet at the FA National Youth Championships.

Goalkeepers are meant to stop goals, not score them.

But if Tasmanian under-15 captain Amelie Millar goes up for a late corner to try and save a game, don’t be surprised if she finds her way onto the scoresheet.

While she possesses a deft touch to rival the best strikers in her age group, Tassie coach Alan Eadie hopes it’s Millar’s shot-stopping which does the talking at the Football Australia National Youth Championships.

Every match from the girls tournament will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from July 3-8.

“She could probably play as a striker if we needed her to,” Eadie said.

The Launceston City product is no stranger to the big stage after being named Goalkeeper of the Tournament at last year’s competition when it was an under-14 competition.

Never afraid to step out of her comfort zone, Millar often plays against the boys in the Northern Championship at home and has also played in the Women’s Super League this season.

“We’ve got a few girls in our under-15s who have started to play some WSL and they’ve made impressive starts to their careers,” he said.

Eadie, who also works for Football Tasmania in player and coach development, said the young star played in the mould of a modern goalkeeper.

The world’s best players have become known for helping their team play out from the back.

“She’s an athletic type, great with her feet. A superstar shot-stopper.

“She’s a leader by example. She’s not your stereo typical goalkeeper barking orders all the time. She’s leading by example with preparation and everything with her is team first.

“We have really high hopes for her going forward.”

Tassie will kick off their under-15 campaign on Wednesday with a clash with NSW Country.

Eadie is hopeful the Tassie teams can put their names up in lights.

“I think there’s some girls in both teams (Under-15 and Under-16) who can certainly put their best foot forward to get that sort of recognition (on a national level),” he said.

“We had one last year who is now playing in Sydney, who went to a Young Matildas camp and I believe we’ve got a couple more in each age group who are more than capable to put themselves in the frame.”
