A FIFA World Cup, a growth in numbers and the expansion of KommunityTV’s broadcast calendar all add up to a year of excitement for the Bill Turner Schools Football tournament.

The time-honoured knockout tournament, which pits the top secondary schools across the east coast head-to-head over the year, returns to KommunityTV screens in August.

For the third-straight year KommunityTV will live stream the action from the tournament’s regional and national finals, and this year the coverage is bigger and better than ever.

For the first time the exclusive live stream coverage will include Round of 32 and Round of 16 action from Victoria and regional NSW at the Albury Football Festival on August 2-3. Attention then turns to the Queensland finals on August 8-9, Northern NSW finals on August 15-16 and finally the national finals in September.

With the arrival of the world’s best women’s footballers on Australia’s shores for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this month, Bill Turner School Football tournament organiser Greg Danvers believed it could only be a positive for the event.

For some of Australia’s top Matildas, the Bill Turner Trophy is where their careers started, with Ellie Carpenter winning the tournament with Westfields Sports High in 2015.

The tournament has already seen an increase in the number of teams competing this year, a continued year-on-year growth for the knockout competition.

“This is our third year partnering with KommunityTV, it has been a fantastic partnership in that last year we had coverage of teams from Cairns right through to Melbourne in the finals,” Danvers said.

“That exposure only strengthens the competition. We have seen that in our numbers this year, we have had around a 10 per cent increase in the number of schools involved in the tournament. That is across both boys and girls tournaments.

“The inclusion of the Albury Football Festival is a great opportunity this year. It is a great market for both the Bill Turner Schools Football competition and for KommunityTV. The Albury Football Festival will feature teams from Mudgee, Dubbo, Victoria and the Riverina.

“It is a great chance to showcase the best young footballers from across a wide region.”

The tournament will be split into the Bill Turner Cup for boys and Bill Turner Trophy for girls.

A new Cup champion will be crowned this year, with reigning champions Narrabeen Sports unlikely to make it out of the Sydney Central pool after suffering two tough losses in their opening games.

Endeavour Sports High and Hunter Sports High appear to be the teams to beat in the Sydney Central conference, St Augustine’s College in Cairns have already progressed to the Queensland finals while Melbourne outfit Maribyrnong College pulled off a shock upset of Rowville Secondary to reach the Albury Football Festival.
