NSW Metro Sky have pulled off the ultimate tournament comeback, downing Queensland White 2-1 to become the U16 Football Australia National Youth champions.

From a 2-0 defeat in the opening round to national champions, grand final goalscorer John Lawson said he never had any doubts.

“It was definitely a bit of a shaky start,” Lawson said.

“But I knew we had the quality and the heart to work for it.”

Metro Sky set up a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime courtesy of goals to Lawson and Ewan Gasowski, but Queensland brought it to within one after a goal from Chimdi Nwogwugwu.

But Lawson said he was confident his team could still pull off the win.

“I knew my boys,” he said.

“I knew they would back me up and hold it together and yeah, we did it.”

After an undefeated tournament, Victoria are the U15 Football Australia National Youth boys champions.

Their Blue team took down South Australia 2-0 in the decider to take home the title for the second consecutive year.

Victoria coach Vaughan Coveny said it’s just reward for an outstanding tournament performance.

“They deserve it,” Coveny said.

“I’m just really excited for the boys, they’ve had a really good week and they deserved the victory.”

It was tight for most of the match and Coveny said his decision to make big changes at halftime ultimately worked out.

“We just had to tweak a couple of things (at half time),” Coveny said.

“Probably the difference was, we brought on five substitutions, which gave us a lot more energy in the second half and we sort of got on top of them.”

Luke Becvinovski added his 11th and final goal of the tournament and Coveny said he was an incredible player to have out front.

“He’s gonna be a great player to watch,” Coveny said.

“He was sick all morning and we didn’t even know if he was going to play today, but the adrenaline took over and he got another goal.”

Meanwhile, two Victorians were named goalkeepers of the tournament, with Sevdim Banusevski the U15s recipient and Oskar von Schrenk for the U16s.

Henrique Oliveira, from South Australia, was named the U15 Player of the Tournament, while statesman Almani Tatu was the U16 Player of the Tournament.

PREVIEW

NSW Metro Sky went into the U16 championships as one of the favourites, with three underage national team players and a premiership-winning coach in Spencer Prior.

On the other hand, Queensland White barely scraped into the quarter-finals with just one win from the group stages, but through grit and determination found themselves in the right place at the right time for a grand final berth.

Queensland White captain Jackson O’Reilly said Metro Sky will be his side’s toughest opponent yet.

“We know it’s going to be a tough 60 minutes,” O’Reilly said.

“But we also know that if we rely on each other, we’ll get the job done.

“We always give 100 per cent and nothing less.”

SA easily defeated NSW Metro Navy 3-0 in their U15 semi-final match up, while Vic Blue had a nervy 3-1 win over state rivals Victoria White.

South Australian keeper Sajjad Husseini said the preparation for the decider is no different to what his team have done all week.

“We just do what we do,” Husseini said.

“We analyse their game before so we can go into it with a clear head, but we don’t change anything.”
