UNDER-16 BOYS GOLD MEDAL MATCH

Reigning champions Victoria Metro have clinched their fourth straight U16 title with a sensational 97-63 victory over South Australia Metro.

Breezing through the preliminary stages and semi-final, Victoria Metro entered the final full of confidence and didn’t disappoint as they easily closed out the contest with a blistering second half.

Vlado Ivkovic was top shelf (22 points) with his uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time. While Stevan Tasic (20), with his usual poise and accuracy, was equally damaging after halftime as the Vics put the pedal down.

He enjoyed plenty of support from Stephen Yiah and the crowd-pleasing Mobarede Akingbade, who delivered two huge dunks.

His first, right on halftime, was the confidence-booster Vic Metro needed as they pushed their lead out to nine points (43-34), just as SA Metro seemed to making some progress.

But after halftime the contest was shot, as the Vics took control and blew out the margin to 28 points with a 31-12 quarter.

Benjamin Ware-Drakeford (15) was another to have a big presence, while the speed of Samuel Silenge was damaging.

Victoria Metro found themselves with personal foul troubles before halftime, but such was their immense depth that it never became a factor.

Dylan Lomman kept the scoreboard ticking over for SA Metro, while captain Henry Riddle tried hard, but they were outclassed.

UNDER-16 GIRLS GOLD MEDAL MATCH

A masterclass in three-point precision by captain Zodia Folau has lifted Vic Metro to their first gold medal in five years with a 77-61 victory over NSW Metro.

Trailing by as much as 13 points in the second quarter, the script at times was not going to plan for the favoured Victorian outfit.

But matchwinner Folau had other ideas as she single-handedly swung the game in the third quarter with a breathtaking display of long-range shooting.

The gifted Folau was unstoppable as she banged on four threes, including three in a row, with the Vics quickly wiping out a nine-point deficit to find the lead for the first time.

Ceejay Caddy then joined in the big hits, landing a three at the end of the third and one at the start to fourth to continue the onslaught.

It was a devastating momentum swing for NSW Metro, who had appeared to be in total control midway through the second quarter.

Caddy would continue to tear the game apart in the final quarter and finish with 13 points.

Tall timber Indy Springett also shone with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Alecia Quinn enjoyed some fine moments and Jasmine Jones was strong at both ends.

For the vanquished, Emma Lukell was a standout with 17 points and a whopping 12 rebounds, Izabella Mansory (13) tried hard, along with skipper Olive Waters (9), but they just lacked the firepower.

It was about Folau, who landed a game-high 23 points, five of which were threes, and had spectators mesmerised with her finishing.

UNDER-16 BOYS BRONZE MATCH

Trailing narrowly at halftime, a Samson Nathan-led recovery has been the driving force behind NSW Country’s runaway 83-54 win against Western Australia Country.

Nathan (23 points/13 rebounds) along with Noah Fenton (17) were instrumental in NSW Country blasting their Western Australia counterparts off the court in the back half.

A 19-8 third quarter was telling, but NSW Country really put the foot down in the last as they outscored WA Country 32-13 in a thumping finish.

UNDER-16 GIRLS BRONZE MATCH

With bragging rights carrying more weight than usual, Queensland South have taken the honours over state mates Queensland North in their bronze medal match.

Behind four points at halftime, the southerners have rallied for a 52-47 victory.

Usual suspect Maddison Reisinger led the way with 18 points and 14 rebounds. The other part of the dynamic duo, Jay Sebasio, finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Addison Davey (16/2) and captain Aria Dooley (11/2) were the mainstays for a spirited Queensland North outfit.
