WHAT WE LEARNED ON DAY 8

TAMBURRINI TOO GOOD

Vic Metro centre Ilana Tamburrini put on masterful display to guide her team into the Basketball Australia Under-16 National Championships final on Saturday. A pre-tournament favourite Vic Metro ran out comfortable 71-37 winners over Queensland North. Tamburrini filled up the stat sheet with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, doing damage at both ends of the court with seven blocks to boot. A Vic Metro 15-0 run in the first quarter broke the game open and it never looked back. Queensland captain Aria Dooley was a one-woman band in the first half, leading her team with 12 points. However, Vic Metro then took full control in the second half, outscoring their rivals 32-12. Alongside Tamburrini, Jasmine Jones was equally prolific with seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

FROM THE CLOUDS

Emma Lukell lived the dream on Saturday, scoring the winning bucket in the final seconds to snatch the most unlikiest of triumphs. With five minutes remaining, NSW Metro were seven points down but stormed home to stun Queensland South at the death, winning 70-68. Sasha Clague was dominant for NSW and two clutch free throws in the final minute tied the scores. Mid-court pressure then saw Lukell steal the ball, play a one-two with Clague and calmly score the winning lay-up with just 10 seconds left. Queensland had one final shot but a three-point attempt missed and it was Lukell, again, who cleaned up the rebound. Earlier, Clague had scored a big three-point on the stroke of halftime to send the teams in level at 32 apiece. She finished with 22 points, four assists and two blocks. For Queensland South, Jay Sebasio stuffed the stat sheet with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists – all match-highs – but couldn’t stop the NSW comeback.

VIC MASTERCLASS

If the Vic Metro Girls’ semi-final win was emphatic, the Boys were utterly dominant. The Big V crushed Western Australia Country 103-40 in Friday’s Basketball Australia Under-16 National Championships Boys semi-final. The team will now have a shot at double championship glory tomorrow. The Vics burst out of the blocks, going on a 16-0 run to start, and going to quarter-time with a 29-2 lead to all but end the match. Elden Stevens was the only points-scorer for WA. The lead only grew as the match went on, 38 points at halftime, 51 at three-quarter-time and 63 by the final siren. Ben Ware-Drakeford led all comers with 20 points, while banking eight rebounds and four assists. Stephen Yiah collected 12 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. WA captain Luke Websdale was his team’s leader with 15 points.

PREVIEW

The playoffs intensity is only set to ramp up when all the action resumes on Day 8 of the Basketball Australia U16 National Championships.

Saturday’s action will be home to semi-final action across both the boys and girls tournaments in Bendigo.

Every matchup will be streamed live and exclusive across three courts on KommunityTV from 10am.

In the girls, Victoria Metro and NSW Metro have booked their place in the final.

Entering Day 8 with so much promise, it was heartbreak for Queensland.

While Queensland North was well beaten by Victoria, while Queensland South suffered an agonising final-minute loss to NSW.

And in the boys, Victoria Metro will have a shot at double championship glory after a dominant win over Western Australia Country.

It will face either giant-killers SA Metro, who shocked unbeaten Queensland South in the quarters, or NSW Country, which has been among the front-runners all week.

Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-16 and National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from July 5-13.

It is the third of five national junior pathways events on the Basketball Australia calendar, following the under-20 and under-18 nationals earlier this year.
