Gawler has capped off a perfect week on the fields at Barratt Reserve to be crowned Division 1 champions of the Sapsasa boys footy carnival.

The Advertiser and KommunityTV exclusively live streamed all the action from field one across the three days of the Sapsasa boys footy carnival. Watch all of the replays below.

Gawler scored four goals in the 29-7 win over Airport, which ensured they finished the week-long tournament with a perfect 27 points.

Airport picked up wins in both of their final games, including a 7.3 (45) to 4.2 (26) win over Southern Fleurieu on the main field, to finish the tournament in third place.

East Adelaide capped off the KommunityTV live stream action on Field 1 with a huge win over Upper South East to lock in a second place finish in Division 1.

Despite a last round loss to City South, going down 1.4 (10) to 4.4 (28), Mid North had just done enough over the opening rounds of the carnival to take out the Division 2 title.

PREVIEW

One of SA’s smallest football regions believes it can compete in this year’s SAPSASA football carnival and set itself up for a strong future.

Kangaroo Island coach Alex Laver believed his young side can produce strong footy during next week’s carnival against both country and suburban SA regions.

“We’re tracking well for now and in the future,” Laver said.

“We’ve got a pretty young side with a lot of year 5s this year and we’re a bit on the smaller side, but what we’ve got is pretty good and our depth is good, too.

“Everyone’s pretty excited and ready to go.”

Western Districts young gun Zac Fogden will lead the Kangaroo Island side through next week’s division four games against both country and suburban sides.

Lavers said Fogden and the rest of the team would benefit significantly from the experience.

“This is the first year since Covid where country and metro teams have played each other, so there’s a little bit of the unknown, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“I think these carnivals are beneficial for any smaller district because it gives kids a chance to play against the best opposition in their age group, use age-appropriate balls and play on big grounds.

“It’s days of intense footy and you often see kids come away really enthusiastic to take their game to the next level.

“For kids to get out there and see what’s on offer beyond the KI bubble is important, and they’ll be stronger and better for the experience.

“It’s also going to develop their skills socially, which is great, too.”

The carnival will include four divisions of boys and girls teams and will kick-off from 10am on Monday and conclude on Wednesday afternoon.
