Garville have continued to impress in the SA Premier League after a convincing nine point win against a competitive Tango side.

It was a story of two halves as Tango danced with the opposition through the first two quarters before Garville took control of the second half, surging to a 63-54 victory.

Tango took off in the first quarter, taking ownership of the middle channel and forcing Garville attackers to expend their energy out wide.

Garville returned the favour, imposing relentless defensive pressure through the centre in the second quarter to regain a four-point lead heading into halftime.

The pressure only continued to mount as Garville’s goal attack Brooke Irlam continued to shoot well, hitting 10 from 11 shots in the third quarter and 36 goals for the game.

A gallant effort from Tango’s goal shooter Jacoba Clough saw her shoulder a huge portion of the shooting duties, draining 48 goals.

But it wasn’t enough to keep Garville at bay, who are now converting goals at 87 per cent this season – an increase of 10 per cent in accuracy from last season.

Tango have earned their second win of the season after toppling Garville in a close 51 – 47 victory.

Despite the back-and-forth affair, Garville couldn’t stop Tango’s persistent attack.

Tango goal shooter Kyla-jo Dudojc was unstoppable as she hit a season high 41 goals.

Lauren Wordern in at Tango’s WA position was another standout, with a high work rate in the goal third as she continued to command control of the ball from the centre pass.

PREVIEW

Tango is ready to cause an upset this week in round six of the Netball SA Premier League season after a tough start to its 2024 campaign.

The side, which sits third bottom with a 2-3 record after wins against Metro Jets and Newton Jaguars, has had an inconsistent first five weeks and will clash with a tough Garville side on Friday night.

Fresh off a 32-goal loss to Matrics, coach Andrew Plenty said the team was confident it could go on a more consistent run.

“We’re probably not where we’d like to be at the moment after showing a lot of promise in the pre-season cup, but we’re gradually improving and believe we can get back to being competitive each week,” Plenty said.

“The Matrics game was a tough one but we have been without Tenille (Gray) for the past couple weeks and we only lost the third quarter by a goal, so there were some positive signs there, we’d just like to be more consistent.

“We’re continuing to develop players though and we’re going to come along with experience at trainings and in games when we’re under pressure.”

Garville has been a top four side to start 2024 and is coming off of a competitive loss to Contax last week.

Plenty said his team was aware of the challenge Friday would bring but remained confident in his players.

“Garville has showed some amazing form so far so for us to get a win would be huge,” he said.

“We know we’re definitely getting back on track and we’ve been building quite nicely despite some frustrations here and there.

“We’re positive and we’ve been taking a lot of confidence out of our recent games so we’re ready to go for Friday.”

Former Super Netball star Nyah Allen returned to Garville for this season and has been dominant as a goaler for her club.

Coach Kirsty Leonard-Down said Allen added experience and smarts to her side.

“She brings a bit more experience around the goal circle and has really helped the players in similar positions,” she said.

“It’s been quite easy for her to transition back into the group.”

Garville lost to Contax by 14 goals last Friday but has put together impressive wins against Oakdale, Newton Jaguars and Metro Jets.

Leonard-Down said she believed the team had what it took to compete all the way to the end this year.

“We want to make sure we stay consistent this season and put four quarters together each week,” she said.

“We’d like to be playing in a grand final this year and it’s probably a season where we’ve got the potential to really do it if we commit to our own brand of play.

“We’re confident we can continue our form but we also can’t underestimate Tango – the competition is a lot stronger this year and they will be hungry so we need to focus on executing our game on Friday.”
