Tigers’ Tyler Carter dislocates ankle in 100-point hammering of North Hobart; Clarence puts Lauderdale to the sword in 76-point thumping

Clarence and the Tigers have made light work of their rivals, dishing out thumping defeats that one losing coach described as “embarrassing”. ROUND 8 REPORTS >>

EMOTIONAL Tigers coach Trent Baumeler has fought back tears after watching the “heart and soul” of the club suffer a serious injury in the shadows of its demolition of North Hobart.

The Tigers chalked up their first 100-point victory in State League history with a 21.11 (137) to 4.4 (28) hammering of the Demons at the Twin Ovals but the side was in no mood to celebrate after a gruesome injury to Tyler Carter.

A minute after booting his seventh goal of the contest, the key forward badly dislocated his ankle in a ground contest.

Players from both teams immediately signalled to the bench for a stretcher, with club doctors unable to put the dislocation back in place on the field in scenes similar to the horrific knee dislocation suffered by former Glenorchy coach Aaron Cornelius in 2014.

Following a 10-minute delay, the umpires consulted with both captains, who agreed to call an early end to the clash.

It was a horror end to what had been a near-perfect day for the hosts, who held North scoreless for 51 and a half minutes and limited the Demons to just one goal after three-quarter time — which came via a 50m penalty midway through the abbreviated final term.

“Tyler is such an important part of our club, not just on the field, he’s been a loyal Tiger who hasn’t gone elsewhere,” Baumeler said.

“He’s played 100 senior games and is closing in on 150 club games. So when a bit of that heart and soul goes down, how do you react?

“I think the strength of the group, we see the character and the care for each other, blokes are in tears because they’re just hurting.

“Pretty much as soon as that happens [every player immediately calling for help], and he is prone sitting there and can’t move, you understand that it is something pretty serious.

“Tyler, give him credit, he plays through a lot of injuries, he plays through a lot of pain at times so if he can’t get up it’s something significant.”

The challenge for Baumeler now is to ensure the side can rally mentally after losing its spearhead for the rest of the 2021 season.

“Glenorchy had to go through it when Aaron obviously got injured, we’re going to have to sort of move past it, as brutal as that sounds, early next week.

“I’ve coached him for a while now, he’ll just want the boys to go on and carry on with the job and keep doing what we’re doing.”

Bombers flattened as Roos run riot

CLARENCE has handed out an old-fashioned drubbing of its Eastern Shore rivals Lauderdale, routing the Bombers by 76 points for its fifth win in six matches.

The Roos welcomed back experience in the form of former AFL players Colin Garland up forward and coach Jeromey Webberley down back and the wise old heads made their presence felt.

Clarence was set up efficiently at both ends and exacted revenge on their neighbours for their round one loss, slamming home 16 goals with 11 individual goalkickers to win 16.14 (110) to 4.10 (34).

“They’ve had the wood on us over the past few years,” Webberley said.

“Even when we’ve both been at the pointy end of the ladder they’ve knocked us off in a couple of finals.

“Today for us was a little bit of retribution. It’s a different group but they’re understanding the fierceness of this rivalry.”

Garland booted two goals in the second quarter before being placed in cotton wool after a crunching contest on the wing mid-game.

“His knee’s been flaring up a bit so we got him off and iced him up,” Webberley said.

Lauderdale coach Daniel Willing was disappointed his side lost its hard edge after earning respect against Launceston last week.

“We thought we’d got that hard edge about our game back but to come out in that manner was really disappointing,” he said.

“To be honest, it’s embarrassing. That’s probably not up to State League standard.

“We got smashed around the contest and when the ball left the contest they worked harder than us.”

The Bombers now sit a 1-6 with finals slipping out of reach.

“We’ve got to stick together and understand that’s not good enough and we got what we deserved today,” Willing said.

Lauderdale bagged the first goal of the contest when Harry Richmond got on the end of a strong series of play but in delightful conditions at Blundstone Arena the day only got worse for the Bombers.

The Bombers’ scoreboard woes were summed up when Josh McGuinness put one out of bounds on the full to cap 20 scoreless minutes in the second term.

Bombers bring down high-flying Blues

REIGNING premier Launceston’s unbeaten run is over after being overrun by North Launceston under lights at UTAS Stadium last night.

The all-conquering Blues led at halftime but the Bombers showed the flag race is far from a one-team affair to record a 11.12 (78) to 10.3 (63) win.

TSL fires up: Rivals clash in Round 8

THE resumption of the boys’ NAB League season has the potential to halt the momentum North Hobart is building into the TSL season but coach Clint French is not looking to make excuses.

The Demons head to the Twin Ovals Saturday afternoon on the back of some recent improved form, having chalked up a breakthrough victory against Lauderdale in round five and nearly stunning Clarence last weekend.

A crushing defeat in between highlights the gap French is trying to close between his side’s best and worst, a factor not helped by losing nine Devils — more than a third of his side — for the next two months.

“Obviously the Devils are back in Devil mode so we lose nine of them, it’s great for them but hard on us, we just have to live with it and build with the guys we’ve got,” French said.

“It is what it is, we’ve just got to live with it.”

French said the challenge will be for the rest of the squad to pick up the slack.

“Those guys are obviously trying to get to their dream of being drafted, we have got to get on with it and play with the people or the teammates that we’ve got and work and develop those guys.

“Next year, anything can happen again. We know we need to recruit some guys as well but the work starts now with that kind of stuff and then hopefully it comes off come October, November.

“It’s just consistency for us I think, we showed that with the win we got against Lauderdale but then the week after we didn’t turn up whatsoever.”

North pushed the Tigers to the death in the opening round, recovering from a 35-point halftime deficit to close to within a kick in the last quarter.

That comeback is enough for Trent Baumeler to know his side can ill afford to rest on its laurels at home.

“What they do really well is they challenge you with their ball movement. They move it fast and you saw for extended periods against Clarence they were able to sort of get what they wanted,” he said.

“If we allow them to be able to move the ball the way they want to move the ball and play their system offensively, we’ll be in for a long day.

“We’ve got to make sure our defensive actions are right and we’re getting that right, and try and get on top of them in that regard and then for us, we talk about we want to build offence off defence.”

Clarence take on Lauderdale

By Luke Edmunds

EASTERN Shore rivals Clarence and Lauderdale have included big names but both say the pressure on each other ahead of Saturday’s derby at Blundstone Arena.

Lauderdale (1-5 and sixth on the ladder) returned Bryce Walsh and Sam Siggins among four changes while the Roos (4-2 and third) have included coach Jeromey Webberley and 2021 recruit Colin Garland.

Baxter Norton remains sidelined for the Roos with a calf injury.

The big inclusions have added to a mouth-watering rematch from round one when Lauderdale won by seven points – but the Bombers have been winless since.

“They outhunted us in round one. They had over 100 tackle attempts. I thought their pressure at the ball and the ball-carrier was awesome that day,” Webberley said.

“If they bring that pressure again they’re going to be right in the contest.

“You only have to look at their top end to know that on any given day they can beat anyone.

“I expect them to come out firing.

“Over the next month if they don’t get up and firing soon they’re going to be too far back to come into contention.”

Lauderdale’s Allen Christensen acknowledged that the Bombers need to get their house in order to make finals but said the pressure was on Clarence.

“Most of the pressure is on them to perform,” he said of the third-placed Roos.

“We’re still building, we’re still trying to find the right way to play.

“We’ve just got to start putting wins together.

“The whole league is pretty young but we feel like we’re a particularly young group.

They need that confidence with a win to prove that what we’re doing is the right way to play.”

Lauderdale put in a gallant performance against league powerhouse Launceston last week and will look to continue that form.

“All the feedback we got from them was that we’d been their biggest challenge so far in terms of the contest,” Christensen said.

“If we bring that every week we think we’re hard to beat but its about bringing that consistent effort.”

TSL teams line-up

By Adam Smith

REIGNING Alastair Lynch medallist Sam Siggins will headline several potential big Lauderdale inclusions ahead of the Eastern Shore derby against Clarence.

With the Bombers striving to kick start a spluttering TSL season — they have lost five straight since defeating the Roos in the opening round — the return of Siggins will be a welcome boost.

The key utility, who missed last Saturday’s clash against Launceston, celebrated the birth of his first child Ayla earlier in the week and looks set to be joined by Billy Rolfe and Bryce Walsh back in the 22.

However two Bombers will be grounded for several weeks.

“I think we’ll lose Will Francis with a hamstring, Tyler Martin hurt his ankle, he’ll miss a few weeks as well,” said assistant coach Allen Christensen, who made his return to the field from a torn hamstring against the Blues.

“Hopefully we get Billy Rolfe back from sickness. Bryce Walsh has been training, see how he pulls up and Sam Siggins will definitely get back.

“A couple of really good ins and we’ll make another couple of changes to try and change the dynamic of our line-up.”

Roos coach Jeromey Webberley said Baxter Norton — who was a late withdrawal against his former side North Hobart — would miss another week with a calf strain, while Darcy Gardner and James Holmes are also unavailable.

Webberley returns, as does Colin Garland.

The return of the boys NAB League competition will see North Hobart decimated by the loss of nine Devils for its clash against Tigers, while Callum Kilpatrick is the latest Demon to earn a tilt with North Melbourne’s VFL side.

“There’s three guys from North Hobart that have played for North Melbourne in the last four weeks,” coach Clint French said.

“We’re obviously doing something right but we need to keep developing what we’ve got so that we’re not throwing so many magnets around week to week.”

Dangerous forward Luke Graham returns for Tigers, who are fresh from a bye.

Brodie Palfreyman, Miller Hodge and James Dowling bolster Launceston ahead its showdown with arch rivals North Launceston, who regain Mark Walsh and Tom Donnelly.
