“Rebuild on the run” has North Launceston still challenging to regain State League throne

North Launceston may have had its TSL throne snatched away last year as several key players departed, but the regeneration is already underway to keep the club well in contention

NORTH Launceston’s “rebuild on the run” will face its biggest test to date when it clashes with cross town rivals Launceston on Friday night.

The two TSL heavyweights show no signs of letting up on their southern counterparts, with the reigning premiers unbeaten and North’s only slip up to a southern enemy coming against Clarence when the Roos produced a barnstorming eight goal third quarter.

The Blues have taken the mantle as top dog after usurping the Bombers in last year’s grand final, as well as completing a 55-point victory in round one.

But North coach Brad Cox-Goodyer has unwavering belief his troops will be better for the experience as the club continues to restock following the exodus of several senior stars in the off-season.

“A lot of guys played their first senior football game in round one against that team that is loaded with guys with experience,” Cox-Goodyer said.

“They have six senior games under their belt now so we are looking for a more consistent performance.

“You would be silly to think you could keep winning year in, year out without any challenges, football clubs change and we are no different.

“Guys move on for different reasons and being able to be competitive and not drop off too far is key.

“It’s kind of a rebuild on the run and integrating some guys into the club and what is most pleasing is they are guys who have come through our junior program, they are committed to the club and it is sustainable.

“Whether we can win it all or not is yet to be seen but I think we’ve shown we can be competitive on the run which is a positive.

“No team is unbeatable, obviously they are going pretty well at the moment and they look pretty unbeatable, but we know within our four walls we have the tools to beat them.”

The rise of Launceston has come from emulating the blueprint of the Bombers — and coach Mitch Thorp has not missed the quick regeneration of the playing list.

He also believes the southern clubs should be taking note.

“For the most part North Launnie have done a wonderful job in rebuilding in a very short period of time.

“‘Coxy’ and ‘Foony’ [Jay Foon] in particular have led the way.

“I think it is a real eye opener for the some of the southern clubs to have a look at what North Launnie have done with just getting some younger guys in, fit, organised, and what you can accomplish.”
