Just months after calling time on a 16-year stint as South Hobart’s NPL coach, legendary Tasmanian football manager Ken Morton has been announced as the club’s new WSL coach.

Morton steps into the role made vacant by the departing Alastair Russell and will coach the women’s super league side for the 2025 season.

Making a statement via the club’s social media late last week, Morton said he was looking forward to the new challenge.

“I am both excited and honoured to step into the role of coach for the South Hobart Women’s Super League team,” he said.

“At South Hobart, our female program holds a special place in our community. It is essential to provide a seamless transition for our players so that they can continue their growth and maintain the momentum they have built. I am committed to ensuring that our team not only continues to excel but also evolves.

“I am eager to tackle the challenges that come with this role.”

Speaking to The Mercury back in August, Morton said he would continue his work with the Morton Soccer School but gave no indication he was planning to remain in the coaching space.

Highly credentialed young coach Max Clarke has replaced him as the NPL coach at South Hobart.

The announcement of Morton taking the reins was quickly followed by the first signing of the off-season with four-time golden boot winner Jazmin White joining the club.

The former Devonport Strikers star won the golden boot award in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023 while she is also a two-time best and fairest winner.

“I am super excited to sign with South Hobart and to work with Ken and the coaching staff,” White said.

“I am looking forward to joining the club that my family members are part of, and I can’t wait for the season ahead with the team.”
