Hurricanes enforcers Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short the perfect match as they rack up records

The lessons learned from last year’s bungled Big Bash final have paved the way for Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short to take BBL|08 by storm.

THE lessons learned from last year’s bungled Big Bash final have paved the way for Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short to take BBL|08 by storm.

Hobart’s dynamic duo has lit up the competition this summer, wreaking havoc on opposition bowling attacks to help the side storm to an 8-2 record ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with the Brisbane Heat.

Short (473 runs at 59.1) and Wade (387 at 43) are the tournament’s two leading run scorers, blazing a host of partnership records in the process.

The pair has combined for nine BBL stands of 50-plus in total — three more than any other combination — while they are also the most prolific partnership in Australian domestic T20 history in total runs scored.

After setting a Hurricanes partnership record of 158 in securing only the second 10-wicket win ever in the Big Bash against Adelaide last Monday, Wade said the group took note of how the Strikers powered to last season’s title with two left handers at the top.

Wade replaced his opening partner (Australian duties) alongside Tim Paine and cracked 71 from 45 balls against the Perth Scorchers in the semi-final upset, but was shifted down the order in the final when Short returned as the outfit wanted a left-hand/right-hand combination.

He was run out for a diamond duck and fined $6000 for abusing ground equipment after hitting his viewing-area seat with his bat in frustration in the 25-run defeat.

“I think we learned from last year, we didn’t think two lefties was always the go up the top of the order and we probably learned from these guys [the Strikers],” Wade said.

“We bit the bullet this year and went with it.”

There are no secrets to the success of the duo, with Wade declaring the most important asset an ability to change gears when required.

“When I used to bat with Aaron Finch we used to have the ability to go up and down the gears together and I think me and D’Arcy can do that.

“A lot of the time I am the one taking the back seat and letting him do his thing in the first six and [against Adelaide] he let me do that.

“That’s a massive part of opening, if you can change your game a bit depending on how the guy at the other end is going, it makes a big difference.

“We both play completely different as well … we hit the ball in completely different areas.”
