Cavaliers rising star Sophie Brewer believes Netball Tasmania’s burgeoning partnership with the reigning Super Netball champions can open up more doors for young Tasmanians desperate to get noticed.

The shooter and fellow emerging Cavaliers talents Sophie Blackberry and Paige O’Neill were recently invited to train with 2024 premiers the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

It comes after Devon product Charlotte Walker was named as a Thunderbirds training partner for this year, while former Hawks mid courter Ellie Marshall was named for the in the club’s Super Netball reserves.

The unbeaten Cavs will hope their young guns can fire when they hit the road on Saturday to face Devon (4-6), who sit a game outside the top four.

The round 13 Tasmanian Netball League open and 19&U clashes will be broadcast live and exclusive on KommunityTV.

“It was a great experience. We got to look at their environment and join in with their gym and training sessions, so it was great to learn a lot from them,” Brewer said.

“The level they train at is crazy, they push each other and are so professional at what they do.

“It was great to see Charlotte be able to sign as a training partner over there, and Ellie is in their reserves team as well.”

Brewer, of Wiradjuri descent from her father’s side, has also represented the Black Swans First Nations team at tournaments the past two years.

She said the sport is working hard to improve its pathways for Indigenous players.

“The Black Swans is another good initiative they started last year. It’s a pathway for young Indigenous girls to look to,” she said.

“It’s a great thing to represent my family and my culture. We had our first Indigenous tournament last year, and it was a great experience to play against such talented Indigenous women.”

After winning last year’s flag, a new-look Cavs under-19s squad is second-last with a 3-7 record.

“We’ve have had a rocky start to the season with a couple of injuries, and it’s a pretty new team with lots of new girls who’ve had to step up to the state league level,” Cavaliers 19s captain Lucy McArthur said.

“We’ve taken the year as it comes and got a couple of wins, but it’s about forging those connections and getting better each game.”
