Joe Pride rolls out new recruit Appin Girl and in-form Crepe Myrtle for his assault on Rosehill

Joe Pride appears to have a solid grip on the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap with two mares that have vastly different records.

Joe Pride appears to have a solid grip on Sunday’s Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap with two mares that have vastly different records.

Former Queenslander Appin Girl will have her first start for the stable in the 1100m contest at Rosehill Gardens and clash with the up-and-comer Crepe Myrtle, the winner of her past two starts.

Appin Girl, a proven stakes performer earlier in her career, found her way to Pride’s yard after the trainer purchased a yearling from the mare’s successful owner/breeder, Howard Blight from South Western Sydney.

Pride said the lightly-raced daughter of Capitalist has pleased since joining the team and he’s expecting a solid showing to kick off the preparation.

“She’s had two hidden trials and they seem to run well fresh the Capitalists,” Pride said.

“Generally when they come down from Brisbane I say they haven’t got much hope but earlier in her career she had some form around the likes of Abounding and Mumbai Muse.

“I think there’s enough depth in her form to make an impression in Sydney.

“She’s drawn good and I would she sets up to run well.

“Based on what she’s shown me at home and what she did at the trials points to her running well from the get-go.”

Adam Hyeronimus will ride Appin Girl, an $8.50 chance with TAB.com.au while her stablemate Crepe Myrtle is the $2.90 second pick behind Hawker Hall at $2.70.

With Zac Lloyd serving a suspension he incurred last Saturday, Andrew Adkins gets a shot on the beautifully bred Godolphin mare that’s a daughter of two Group 1 winners, Exceed And Excel and Dixie Blossoms.

“I love her,” Pride said. “She’s a really nice mare this.

“She was stiff on debut bumping into Lyles at the midweeks but since then she more than made up for the first-up defeat with two good strong wins and the horse (Swordplay) she beat last time won on Wednesday.

“She’s got a bit head start on Appin Girl in that she’s fit and ready to go.

“She continues to do well and I expect her to be running well again on Sunday.

“I’m going to give her a little break after this run to get her ready for the autumn.”
