Grace Lutheran College student Izaack Powell debuts for Brisbane Roar before going back to school

On Friday night, Izaack Powell made his debut for the Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium. Today, the Grace Lutheran College 17-year-old heads back to school like any other normal Year 12.

Birthday boy Izaack Powell traded boots for books yesterday as he returned to school, still on the high of becoming the youngest player to represent Brisbane Roar in the A-League.

Powell, who today turns 17, was on the field for an hour at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, helping the struggling Roar to a shock 2-1 win over Sydney FC.

It was Brisbane’s first win in 13 games and an occasion the Grace Lutheran College student will never forget.

“Playing on Suncorp Stadium is every kid’s dream. For me to be out there looking around at the crowd, playing alongside some of the players I’ve grown up watching, it was surreal,” Powell said.

“I was pretty nervous wondering whether I was going to get brought on at all (off the bench) but I was pretty happy to come on early in the game so I could get some good game time under my belt.

“I’d been watching (Sydney) earlier this season tearing up the A-League – it was crazy to be out there.”

For now, it’s back to the reality of life as a Year 12 student hoping to do well enough academically go to university next year.

“I’m not sure which course yet. I try to do my best at school – it’s pretty important,” Powell said.

“The school does help me a lot with my training commitments during the week. They are really understanding.”

To help get to the Roar’s Crestmead training base without having to call on his ever-supportive parents, Powell hopes his birthday gifts today include his driver’s licence.

“They’ve put in a lot of time, driving me to training down to Logan and all around Brisbane, so I owe it all to them,” he said.
