Darren Winter ends his month-long self-imposed media ban after Lauderdale brushes aside North Hobart

Lauderdale took another step towards its best football with a clinical rout of North Hobart at SkyBus Oval, before coach Darren Winter took aim at AFL Tasmania.

LAUDERDALE coach Darren Winter has broken his self imposed media ban — and immediately taken aim at AFL Tasmania.

Speaking after the Bombers took another stride towards their best football with a comprehensive 12.10 (82) to 4.5 (29) defeat of North Hobart, Winter took a tongue in cheek shot at the governing body.

The outspoken coach said AFL Tasmania had “broken” the rules on player transfers in allowing Demon Julian Dobosz to return to the TSL after the transfer deadline date.

Dobosz kicked two goals — including the first of the match inside 90 seconds — in his first State League appearance since 2015, after being granted a special exemption to rejoin the Demons from VAFA side Caulfield Grammarians two weeks ago.

“We started a bit slow when Dobosz kicked a couple of goals, which I think is fantastic for the competition that AFL Tas were able to break the rules and slide him in,” Winter said.

“We shouldn’t have blokes missing out on games, so I was pleased they were able to break the rules for some players.”

Winter has not spoken publicly since after the round three defeat to North Hobart, which was the first game the VFL-listed pair Nathan Oakes and Luke Nelson suited up for Lauderdale.

The duo were cleared at the expense of pre-season recruits Jeffrey McDonald and Nicholas Connors, with Connors only allowed to play in the development league after being unable to return to Melbourne because of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Nelson played a starring role in the victory at SkyBus Oval, kicking 4.3 while fellow Victorian recruit Adrian Kalcovski booted three first-quarter goals as the Bombers strung together back to back wins to consolidate third spot on the ladder.

“I think we took them [the Demons] pretty lightly so we focused on this game really heavily on how they played and what they did to us last time,” Winter said.

“It was a good result to be able to turn that around.”

The hosts pulled away from the Demons at every change, impressing with some slick ball movement while dominating at stoppages courtesy of another solid outing from ruckman Haydn Smith.

Skipper Bryce Walsh again led from the front, finding plenty of the ball while also nullifying Jack Sandric.

A third straight defeat left North coach Richard Robinson conceding his side has lost confidence.

“We have lost our connection and confidence, with that you are made to look slow and skill execution was poor, but that probably takes a bit away from the way Lauderdale played today though,” Robinson said.

“We just have to make sure we stick together and get out of this little slump we are in.”

Compounding the defeat was the loss of key defender Bailey Walker in a second-quarter incident Robinson was unwilling to comment on.

“I’m sure the MRP will take a close look at that,” he said.
