University keeps unbeaten T20 record intact as James Faulkner warms up for BBL assault

James Faulkner got one up on several Hurricanes teammates after another dominant day, helping his team take down the reigning premiers.

HURRICANES all-rounder James Faulkner continues to wind back the clock to his dominant years as he looms to hit this year’s BBL at full throttle.

Faulkner will enter Hobart’s first match of the Big Bash on Thursday against the Sydney Sixers in pristine touch after continuing his white-hot form on the second CTPL T20 festival day.

University was the big winner — picking up another pair of victories to improve to 4-0 in the format — before Saturday’s late afternoon matches were washed out.

And leading the charge in both games at Anzac Park was Faulkner.

In the blockbuster morning clash against reigning premiers Lindisfarne, Faulkner blasted a 36-ball 73 (four boundaries, five sixes) as the Lions piled on 5-167 against an attack led by Hurricanes star Nathan Ellis (3-21).

Faulkner (2-19) then landed a major double blow in his second over with the ball, removing BBL teammates Mac Wright and Ben McDermott within three deliveries.

Ellis flashed his skills with the bat in compiling 48 from 31 balls, but Lindisfarne was dismissed for 136 with Joel Logan picking up 3-31.

On the quick back-up against Glenorchy, Uni again posted a formidable total, 6-162, with Faulkner top scoring with 49 and Sam Harbinson pitching in an unbeaten 40.

Faulkner again struck early with his second ball, with the Pies reaching 2-72 before the rain hit after 11 overs, leaving them behind on DLS.

New Cane Tim David also pushed his case for selection in the opening BBL fixture.

David, who has 14 T20 international appearances to his name for Singapore, chalked up his second half century in four games for Greater Northern as the Raiders split their contests against Clarence and New Town.

Despite clearing the rope six times in his whirlwind knock of 67 from 31 balls against the Roos, David’s efforts were not enough to secure the points.

The Raiders’ total of 6-137 was overhauled by the hosts with six balls spare, with Harry Allanby (43), Justin Galeotti (29) and Michael Jones (26) the main contributors.

Greater Northern fared better in their second match, amassing 8-160, with the highlight Sam O’Mahony’s 63 from just 24 balls.

Bucks opener Sam Wright returned fire with his own 45-ball 66, but New Town fell 11 runs short as Jonathon Chapman (4-25) cleaned up the lower order.

Kingborough found itself on the wrong end of losses to North Hobart and South Hobart-Sandy Bay.
